Is the photo as good a likeness as your avatar? At least it's in colour.

The idea would be that the pilot cert with a photo ID would be instead of an ASIC. It could require a clearance when you first get your pilot cert but not again for 10 years like your passport.

No argument from me on that.

My post was in reply to the suggestion the form and fee should be rolled up into your pilot renewal.

We all need to make some coherent submissions to that, not just complain about how dumb it is but actually come up with good ideas.

Just wish we had some sort of group who could represent the position of recreational aviation on our behalf.

You should look at the MSIC requirements. It's even more hilarious than the ASIC (mind you, at least you can't get an ASIC on the basis of holding a MSIC). It used to say that if you had attempted an act of piracy you would be refused one!

Having worked at Heathrow when the IRA were at their peak and the BAA 'brown army' of security guards were engaged, I can safely say that civil airports are basically indefensible. Unless that is, as was done by the RAF Regiment in Oman, you use ground mapping radar and other devices and bomb the F out of any contact with 80 mm mortars.

Like the crap we put up when traveling on commercial airlines , its basically a sham to con the gullible into thinking they are safe and making private security firms a bloody fortune. Not to mention that they pay peanuts and get monkeys that are probably only rudimentary screened in the first place. Ahmed on the scanner?????

If you had to fly into Mudgee, say, to get some work done on your avionics, a call to the workshop first would ensure that you get an escort from your aircraft to and from the workshop.

But you need a VIC and an escort if you don't have an ASIC and wish to be airside on a controlled airport.

I just recently renewed mine. An offence of that nature could cost me my job, so no choice 013_thumb_down.gif.ec9b015e1f55d2c21de270e93cbe940b.gif.

At previous renewal, I wrote to my Federal MP pointing out that in the previous two years I'd visited so-called "security-controlled airfields" on no less than 60 occasions ranging from Geraldton, WA to Rockhampton, Qld, and never had my ASIC checked. However my wife went through the barrier to get to the loo at Emerald and then couldn't get back. I couldn't leave the aircraft because it was a windy day (Dorothy has unreliable brakes, and a low wing loading). She eventually had to throw a tantrum before someone would let her back in. So, far from enhancing security, all the ASIC had done was make things damned inconvenient.

I got a form letter back with the usual bulldust which didn't address my points at all (ie, How was this system enhancing security if no-one was checking?). Then I got asked for it at Mildura. As I was about to swing the prop, I had it tucked into my pocket. Funny thing was, the chap asking me didn't have his showing (we were both airside), so before I volunteered mine I asked him to show me his. He looked a little embarrassed, and we compared our ID's (his was grey) and then we each went about our business.

So far, that's the only occasion I've been asked for it. If I was paranoid, I'd think that the check was specifically targeted at me to demonstrate that they were doing something... but I'm not that paranoid, or so the voices inside my head tell me....

Emerald is the worst I have experienced. They won't even give you the gate code, which is changed regularly, without attending the office somewhere and signing an agreement. Small airport, nothing to do one would assume, and HIGH RISK area!!!!!!!

Birdsville wanted to see ASIC to get fuel also. A lot of terrorism occurs at Birdsville.

Need one to get the gate code to get airside at Townsville to the GA area.

I agree it achieves nothing but if you don't want to be limited in where you can legally go it is , at least currently, necessary. Some claim they don't have one and don't need it, but check where they fly, if you don't go anywhere then that would be correct.

As a mine worker pointed out when being checked for explosives at Townsville, why check me on the way out to the mine where we have tons of the stuff, and no checks when coming home? Rice to China!

The Navigator and I dropped in to Ceduna when they were beginning to implement this madness. At the time Ceduna had two RPT flights per week. They were in the process of installing three video cameras to monitor activity at the airfield in case of terrorism...

One positive is the slight improvement in aircraft security as a result of these changes- you are less likely to have your tanks milked or your headsets stolen these days.

Most of the problems with ASIC, apart from the shere stupidity of the whole idea is that the airport operators want to control you. My local airport, Gladstone, requires an ASIC to get into the GA area and also the LAME's workshop, both nowhere near the RPT stuff. Consequently with the added $11 landing fee, I don't go there.

The airport was upgraded at great expense to the local rate payers and nil input from state or federal government. Now I have to pay for the upgrade from my rates and also pay to go there. I don't even get my ASIC card from then now.

Should have escorted him off the airside as a Grey ASIC does not permit one to be airside, it's just as useful as not having an ASIC at all (airside)

Obviously a case of get rid of the stupid card or start charging those who don't comply - can't justerify penalising those who comply and ignor offenders.

Maybe we should divide the cost by the number of days we have it then it will not seem that bad.

The cost to have water connected to a block even if you do not use it also hurts.

Be careful what you ask for you may just get it it.

Imagine the forum discussion if at every airport you went to your ASIC was checked.........

Have a look at the SAAA website. There are a load of submissions by members there. Did you send one in? Somehow I managed to send two in, don't know how.

Remember that if you want to get a new one later on you may need to be interviewed by the AFP.

An interview with the AFP.... could have a lot of fun with that.

I love those sort of interactions. "Are you or have you ever been a terrorist?"
