facthunter Posted September 30, 2014 Posted September 30, 2014 I think there were dedicated aircraft used by US presidents before the L1049. They probably didn't use that specific callsign. Before that the C54/ DC-4 was used extensively, being about the first plane capable of flying intercontinentally with reliability. It wasn't however, pressurised although the design incorporated features for that. The Douglas DC-6 was developed from it. Bigger faster and pressurised with 2 speed direct gear driven superchargers, for higher altitude flight. Nev 1
DonRamsay Posted October 1, 2014 Posted October 1, 2014 Thanks Planey. That is a very interesting story of why the "Airforce 1" call sign was created. I do hope they manage to save it. I have a soft spot for the big Connie. My dad flew to the USA in 1957 in a Super G and it was a really big deal then. Refuelling on small islands on the way over. Navigating by the stars. As different an era as I can imagine.
facthunter Posted October 1, 2014 Posted October 1, 2014 Astro nav was the go. Not much good if you are in cloud, but you could get above them. Drift sight also used. Full time navigators. Nev 1
