dazza 38 Posted November 17, 2014 Posted November 17, 2014 Hi all, I saw on the news that a Sportstar went down on the Sunshine Coast. According the news the sole occupant was a female pilot who was OK. The news of course had no idea what the aircraft was but even though it was badly damaged. I could tell it was a Sportstar, the latest shape type.
dazza 38 Posted November 17, 2014 Author Posted November 17, 2014 It looks like she put it down along some sort of gully or drain. Good job though on her part.

There was no runway on the aerial shots taken by the 9 news. Near a runway maybe.
Mick Posted November 18, 2014 Posted November 18, 2014 I found this pic of the aircraft involved in yesterdays accident - To me the crashed aircraft looks more like the Piper Sports operated by the Sunshine Coast Aero Club- This is the Sportstar operated by the club - Note the Sportstar is silver not white, also the angle of the leading edge of the fin on the crashed aircraft looks more like the Piper Sports than the Sportstar, ie more raked angle. 1
Geoff13 Posted November 18, 2014 Posted November 18, 2014 24-8108 acorrding to the Sunshine Coast Aero Club web site is a Piper Sport not a Sportstar. Cheers Geoff13 1
aj_richo Posted November 18, 2014 Posted November 18, 2014 Compare the rear windows of the crashed machine to the silver Sportstar, longer and come to a sharp point... The canopy on the ground has the same fibreglass roof portion as the silver version, the Piper Sports does not. I conclude its a Sportstar 1
GAFA Posted November 18, 2014 Posted November 18, 2014 The photo posted above of the silver Sportstar has been taken from the Sunshine Coast Aero club web page. Unfortunately most of the photos on their web site are outdated. To see what their current fleet looks like you need to go to their Facebook page. Here you will see that their Sportstar Max is now WHITE with small blue stripes on the fuselage going up behind the rear window and blue stripes at the bottom of the fin. (the rego is still 24-7324). Their Sportstar also has the top of the canopy painted white. If you look at the picture of the crashed aircraft you will see the blue stripes going behind the rear window, top of the canopy is white and blue stripes at the bottom of the fin. You can also compare the the crashed aircraft photo with the Piper Sport photo and see the location of the blue stripes do not match, it has Piper Sport written on the side of the fin and it has the sliding canvas canopy cover. 1 1
biggles Posted November 19, 2014 Posted November 19, 2014 I assume that the engine failed . Any word as to the cause , if in fact that did happen ? Bob
Guernsey Posted November 19, 2014 Posted November 19, 2014 Engine failure??? It looks like failure to have an engine!! . Alan. 1 3
Mick Posted November 19, 2014 Posted November 19, 2014 I assume that the engine failed . Any word as to the cause , if in fact that did happen ?Bob From the news report ( for what that's worth ) it was hit by a gust on landing & pushed off the strip into the gully. Not an engine failure.
dazza 38 Posted November 19, 2014 Author Posted November 19, 2014 Err when I said Sportstar, I actually meant to say PiperSport. . At least I got the gully correct.lol 1
Mick Posted November 19, 2014 Posted November 19, 2014 Err when I said Sportstar, I actually meant to say PiperSport. .At least I got the gully correct.lol Either way it 's not so sporty anymore, I think the newness has worn off.
motzartmerv Posted November 19, 2014 Posted November 19, 2014 Im confused..Is it a sportstar or a Piper sports?
Thruster87 Posted November 19, 2014 Posted November 19, 2014 Im confused..Is it a sportstar or a Piper sports? Sportstar Max looking and comparing what's on their Facebook page https://www.facebook.com/SunshineCoastAeroClub/photos/pcb.986567511369266/986556994703651/?type=1 1
dazza 38 Posted November 19, 2014 Author Posted November 19, 2014 Im confused..Is it a sportstar or a Piper sports? I'm confused as well, they look similar in a bent state.
Geoff13 Posted November 19, 2014 Posted November 19, 2014 Me to. I did see a photo earlier today that clearly showed the rego number on the side of the bent plane, hence my earlier post. However I can no longer find that image. Cheers Geoff13
GAFA Posted November 19, 2014 Posted November 19, 2014 It's the Sportstar, refer to my previous post about the location of the stripes on both aircraft and the canopy.
dazza 38 Posted November 19, 2014 Author Posted November 19, 2014 Err when I said Sportstar, I actually meant to say PiperSport. .At least I got the gully correct.lol Looks like I was right the first time. Thanks to AJ and GAFA. Thank god, I thought I was losing my touch. 1
dlegg Posted November 19, 2014 Posted November 19, 2014 According to this article, sportstars(evector), Remos and Piper Sport (czeck? aircraft works) are the most dangerous LSA in the USA. http://flightdesign.com/files/Media/The%20Aviation%20Consumer%20-%20LSA%20Accidents.pdf 1 1
GAFA Posted November 19, 2014 Posted November 19, 2014 The Piper Sport was out flying earlier this morning, so this confirms it was the Sportstar that crashed.
