We have problems up here with ex- army Majors who have not swung a tool themselves and have seen nothing but helicopters., with supposably expired grease !.....

OME, I'm guessing you are not ex RAAF. I'd love to know why members of the RAAF are so low in your esteem. Just because someone is ex RAAF does not make them incompetent or unable to do a job outside the RAAF. In my state there are no ex RAAF airworthiness inspectors. I have not heard anything good about the ones we have.

No, I'm not ex Armed Services. I'm mentioned their being ex-RAAF because that's the story that has been told to me. However, the military's maintenance methods seem to be "Pull it. Bin it. Replace it. And if you haven't got a replacement, leave the airplane in the back of the hangar out of service until the replacement part arrives. " That approach doesn't cut it in the private sector. There's no money in unfinished work. And having to employ someone to maintain these records is a further impost on the profitability of the small workshop. That's why " They are all ex industry and are now pinging people for doing the same things they did when they worked for a living." CASA over-regulation sent them to the wall.

 

So perhaps the problem with airworthiness inspectors is not that they are ex RAAF but that they have been sucked into the CASA culture.

That's probably a good summation of the situation.

Is there any honest people left in aviation or have they Retired. For 3 years I have been trying to enjoy aviation and all I get feed is rubbish. Some aviation organisations would not survive in the real world given the poor workmanship and the rubbish they offer.Our Aviation industry is over governed to piont that it protects unscrupulous operators. We the aviators are treated to over priced under performing people, selling, building and maintaining our air craft. If this industry was dealing with the larger general public the government would have held an public inquiry. I have over 30 years in the motor industry and I can tell you - the motor industry would not get away with the rubbish that the aviation industry seems able offer . Once aviation people have sat an exam and received a piece of paper they are untouchable and because of the piece of paper we are expected to believe what these people say and charge . It seems there is no recourse . Our regulators are full of self importance and seem to be unable do anything accept to offer some BS spin to the public. This is how I feel.

anybody want them as the powers to be said that they are ok these parts were removed from storch 24 4524 that was given an airworthy tick with these parts in stalled

 

safety what bloody safety my dealings with casa and raa stiff you get no help what so ever from either party or a letter that they don't want any thing to do with you neil

I sympathise with anyone who feels scammed by their maintenance org or L2. I can't really comment on what other people or org's do, but as Chief Engineer of AvServe at Coldstream, am doing my best to build our reputation as a maintenance org that is known for integrity and seeking to do the best for our customers. GA and RAAus maintenance is a tough gig with a constant battle to contain costs while delivering quality service. I realised that trying to beat the 'lowest common denominator' would be a mistake, which means that in order to be recognised we need to go 'above and beyond' in quality and customer service. Also as was the case only this week, we need to be ready to admit it to customers if we get something wrong, and find ways to ensure our customers are not left 'out of pocket' for any errors that one would reasonably expect us not to make. Sorry if this sounds too much like a shameless plug, however seeing as the original thread asked the question it seems approprate to respond and say that there are people and org's out there that are at least trying to do the right thing by our customers.

Problem with the military is they are pretty wasteful and have never had to put their hand into their own pockets to pay for anything.

 

Some time back i spent a few weeks at the RAAF base at Wagga for the military skydive nationals and the amount of waste i saw blew me away. Scrap bin was a delight to rummage through. made a few camera mounts and carry boxes plus hardware. Lights left on, compressors running 24/7. Avgas and Jet A seemed to come from a endless tank. Couldn't complain about the amount of food and beer they gave us tho.

 

Oh by the way has everyone changed from winter air to summer air in their tyres yet? About $40. for a 6x4.

I have had dealings with both good and bad LAMEs and they are not much different from any other business. Our local LAME seems to be good as far as I can tell, he hasn't tried to rip me off. That is in contrast to other business in this area, especially car dealers. They are so bad that very few people buy locally, they prefer to go to Rocky or bribane.

The even funnier thing is that now, a Commer would be a good subject for an historical vehicle restoration. God I feel old!!!

Nope, well not when I was in. We had deep level maintenance repair and over haul facilities. As a example I used to work in the undercarriage work shop at Amberley for a couple of years. We used rebuilt components from scratch.

Ps the change from winter to summer isn't so bad and some say it's not too important, actually some of your landings if still done with winter air in the tyres can appear to be pretty 'cool'. BUT it is a totally different story using summer air in the winter time as this is a major cause of people coming in too hot:no no no:.

 

I have heard of some people insisting on using winter air all year round but I would caution against that.

Commer knockers. They date from the time that England had a car industry. Long gone now. I never drove a knocker but we had 5 ton Commers in the army and they had a horrible gearbox, not many could do quiet changes as they were an extremely fast box. Not like the Diamond Tees and AEC Matadors, where you used to have smoko while changing from 2nd to 3rd.

Like $13.50 for one cup of tea and one cup of coffee at Hungry Jacks at Coolangatta Airport last week.

Every day they find another mug who won't come back.

 

My partner paid, but if it was me, the cups would now be securely planted in a place somewhere where the sun don't shine.

The $13.50 for a coffee and a tea at the airport,is NOT a result of price gouging by the seller I'm sure , but a reflection of the amount of rent having to be paid by the retailer, plus penalty payments for the staff. ......Airports are good business! For the owner...........
