Astronaut Training

When NASA was preparing for the Apollo Project, it took their astronauts to a Navajo reservation in Arizona for training. One day a Navajo elder & his son came across the space crew walking among the rocks. The elder, who spoke only Navajo, asked a question. His son translated for the astronauts: What are these guys doing amongst our rocks on our land without our permission? One of the astronauts said that they were practising for a trip to the moon.

 

When the son relayed this comment, the Navajo elder got all excited & asked if it would be possible to give the astronauts a message to deliver to the moon. Recognising a promotional opportunity when he saw one, a NASA official accompanying the astronauts said: "Why certainly". He then told an astronaut to get a tape recorder out of the vehicle. The Navajo elders comments in the microphone were brief. The NASA official asked the son if he would translate what his father said on the tape. The son listened & laughed, but refused to translate.

 

So the NASA official took the tape to a nearby Navajo tribe village & played it for the other tribe to translate. They too laughed loudly but refused to translate the elders message to the moon.

 

Finally an official government translator was summoned to translate the elders message.

 

The translator once he stopped laughing relayed the message on the tape which stated:

 

"WATCH OUT FOR THESE AXXHOLES, THEY HAVE COME TO STEAL YOUR LAND".
