Debating between Part 103 USA FAA Ultralight and Light Sport. Thinking of "commuting" 600 miles from Cincinnati to New York City area (Morris County Airport near Morristown, New Jersey) to visit one set of Grandchildren eight to 10 times a year. Soloed in Hershey-bar winged (1960's) Piper Cherokee in late 1970's as member of an inexpensive flying club that charged $14 per hour including full fuel tanks.

Now want to build or share-purchase an affordable plane. James Wiebe's Belite seems impressive from afar as does the ultralight Fokker mono-wing afrom Bob Baslee. Although the choices are many: pusher highwings such as eGull, Randall Fishman's twin-boom ePlane, the Sonex/Waiex product lines, Foxbat/Nynja/Bushcat/X-Air, Rans Courier and S6ES, Zenith/Zenair/Tedesco/Heintz/Skykits/World mishmosh of STOLstuff, as well as TEAM/MiniMax and VolksPlane.

And...why would Any Aussie plane use a Rotax 9-series rather than a Jabiru (spelling?) given the facts that Rotax is liquid-cooled, heavier, uses a gearbox, costs more and has a shorter TBO (due to running twice as fast)? What Am I Missing?

As you say, lots of aircraft choices, although for regularly commuting 600 miles (and back), a 100kt LSA may be a better choice than a 50kt ultralight.

As for the Jabiru and Rotax question - 075_amazon.gif.0882093f126abdba732f442cccc04585.gif

Welcome Cyclehead

I would suggest you do a search here on jabiru and just pick the latest posts you might be surprised by what you see I think.

Hiya Cyclehead. . . . . Nice to see one of our American Brethren on tis forum,. . . . .we don't seem to get many, it's probably something to do with the unique Aussie sense of humour ! ! ! !

Well, . . .you mentioned quite a few airplanes in your post,. . .some of which I'm not familiar with, but if I was going to carry out a 1200 Mile round trip maybe 10 times a year, I'd prefer my machine to be capable of cruising at something like 140 / 160 Miles per hour,. . . . otherwise it could be a longish day each way, BUT if you've got plenty of time, there are some Great little airfields in the States, and I'd like nothing better than to tour around a few hundred of them. . .! it's on my bucket list anyway ! . . . You never mentioned the VANS series of aircraft, . .? some of them are capable of a nice turn of speed ??ie, nudging 200 MPH. . . . Gotta have plenty of dollars for the Avgas though ! ! !

It would depend upon what sort of dollars you want to throw at the project I guess,. . . . anyway, keep in touch and let us know what you decide to do Sir.

All the best, and welcome to the forum ( Plenty of Jabiru / Rotax discussions here . . . .)

Phil.

Get a good condition Cub, Load it up and stay low and SEE the place. If you are really commuting, go airlines Nev
