Marty_d Posted February 2, 2015 Posted February 2, 2015 A high-winged option would be even simpler, you don't even need the rocket. Just a hinged flap under the seats, pull the lever and down you go... it could automatically deploy your parachute on the way down! No wings in the way, no tail surfaces to clear. What could be easier? Of course, you probably wouldn't want to eject just above the ground, or while inverted.

Oh, I dunno Marty,. . . . you could maybe eject inverted, . . . then stand on the upturned fuselage for a few seconds to see which way to to jump for the shortest walk to the pub ? ? ?

Good point Phil! If you were the right way up, you just grab the u/c leg on the way out and hang there like a monkey for a few seconds. Depending why you ejected in the first place, perhaps you could even swing from wheel to wheel to help turn the stricken aircraft in the direction of the pub.
Bennyboy320 Posted February 2, 2015 Posted February 2, 2015 The straps around you legs are called "boyangs" they are there to pull your legs into the seat as you ride up the ejector rail & stop your legs from flailing in the airflow & dislocating/breaking, think snapping a chicken wish bone. As far as downwards ejection seats the original F104 Starfighter was fitted with this type of seat, killed lots of test pilots as the original engine was very unreliable & the engine failure when just airborne was extremely challenging, i.e. you had to roll inverted at low speed & eject, they redesigned it a short time later. 2
