facthunter Posted February 27, 2015 Posted February 27, 2015 This is one ot the Griffon Engined versions. Lots more power for low altitudes and not as pretty a cowl for the engine. Nev
Mick Posted February 27, 2015 Posted February 27, 2015 Sorry Nev, the Mk XVI ( Mk 16 ) Spit was a Merlin, albeit a Packard Merlin made by the Yanks. Spit marks are confusing & often misleading as the Mk XIV ( 14 ) was Griffon powered, you would think that the 16 would have been later and hence also be Griffon powered, but that was not the case. I believe that the Packard Merlins had a different intercooler and some other differences that meant that Packard powered Spits did have a slightly different shaped cowl to the Rolls-Royce Merlin Spits.
mauld Posted February 27, 2015 Author Posted February 27, 2015 I think it makes it look quite sporty, I can see were the E type Jag may have got its shape from.
facthunter Posted February 28, 2015 Posted February 28, 2015 Mk 14 was what I was referring to. Must get my roman numerals right eh! Nev
