So I'm going to be on the South Island of New Zealand at the start of may for the annual family holiday.

As best I can tell theres no big airshows coinciding with our visit, but does anyone have any good pointers or websites for local flying days or events?

Hi Shu77,

How long have you got?? If you like WW1 & WW2 planes then NZ South Island is one of the best places to visit! Not sure about shows coinciding, but museums abound. Check out the following :-

Hire an aircraft if you can. The scenery is awesome. In nice weather mountain flying in the SI is something to behold. I think now to gain a PPL in NZ you must hold a Mountain Flying endorsement. When I did mine there there wasn't one so it probably was spawned by the many crashes in mountainous terrain. After the 2000 Warbirds over Wanaka I decided to go to Milford Sound. No-one said I couldn't. Luckily the weather was kind. It is not far from Queenstown as the crow flies but the Southern Alps are over 10,000 feet there & when you get over the top, Milford Sound is basically straight down. We were gob smacked by the terrain & I had to continually remind myself to fly conservatively. An experience that will stay with me for life.

Museum at Christchurch I found excellent. There is a repair section there too worth going through. The average visitor doesn't. Nev
