Guest ozzie Posted April 15, 2015 Posted April 15, 2015 I saw on the news tonight that it looks like work is defiantly starting on Sydney's 2nd airport. People starting to move and houses starting to be knocked down. Other residents have until mid June to vacate. Only took 40 years of tossing this hot potato around. They say it will be the biggest earth moving project since the Snowy River Scheme and when finished will be bigger than Ben Herr. Wonder how many broken legs will be created chasing contracts. This will be an interesting twist to the usual airport vs resident clashes we have seen in the past. Instead of people moving next to an existing airport and then start complaining, it will be the other way around, with the airport moving in next to existing residential areas. Ha ha at last, sweet revenge!

If you were the developer offer the federal government a all new GA airport on the northern edge - you know state of the art facility's etc - sell the other land to offset the cost's to make your offer sharper. The two control zones for Mascot and Badgerys will for all purpose's cut across the basin from the Blue Mountains to sea. Wedderburn could end surrounded on the southern side. Lets see

mkennard Posted April 15, 2015 Posted April 15, 2015 I would imagine a GA lane but would have to be 1000ft AGL which doesn't leave much room for jets on approach unlike Victor1 which is 500ft. Here's hoping. It will be ages before the first plane flies.

To the west there are a few nasty hills. I am however not worried as I am sure Macquarie Bank and CASA will cradle all our hopes and dreams in loving arms 1

Richmond was discussed a few time back when I was in the RAAF. I have never been there but apparently the runway cannot be extended for some reason or another.

It would have a huge buffer around it. It has also been suggested that it is time for the RAAF to move on from Willy as well, but the base boss went up in arms over that. Seems he likes living in Port Stephens to much and looks down on Dubbo or Cobar. As for the Navy they were supposed to move to Jarvis Bay years ago.

Other than the demands of NIMBYs what good reason is there to screw over the armed forces by sending them out to Cobar. It is not a matter of looking down or up someones nose but maybe the people who demand that the services vacate should themselves move and those doing it tough for the rest of us can continue in congenial accommodation where the facilities and families currently exist. Putting the NSW Parliament at Cobar might be a great idea 1

It kind of made sense to move the other Sqns to Amberley as Brisbane has a big Army base at Enoggera . Contrary to what FT thinks, the defence force does not have a endless money pit. There was serious considerations at the time but nothing eventuated.

When all these bases were built they were pretty remote with hardly any residential around them. Different story now. Moving them and the Army over the ranges would not only open up some land and another airport it would offer huge employment opportunities in some towns that desperately need it. They could also play all night and day and not piss half of Newcastle and the Hunter Valley off with their racket.

The trouble with Chinchilla is that the developers moved in building a lot of houses when most people knew that once the CSG construction projects were built, the construction workers would move on. QGC has their head quarters there which helps a bit. I spend a fair bit of time in Chinchilla when on shift buying bits and pieces. We also employ a lot a locals. But there is a massive difference between a town supporting operations and maintenance and construction to now just being operations and maintenance. The town has grown heaps in the last 3 years with there now being a KFC and Maccas. I have noticed that the roads are very quiet compared to the peak of construction when the roads were very busy. 1

Curfews don't make sense in the modern aviation world of International flight. Well Kingsford Smith has ocean on one side. There's potential for the ODD dense fog at both but Badgery's would be worse potentially, but they would fog together most times. I can't see Newcastle having anything like the noise problem that Sydney has and will have . It's a lifestyle factor, like traffic noise and fumes road congestion tolls and parking difficulties. Part of the whole picture as a place to live. Cities can be exciting places to live but the facilities like suitable ultralight airports can be impossible as they don't make the bucks /sq metre requirement.. Nev 1
old man emu Posted April 18, 2015 Posted April 18, 2015 There are a couple of reasons why the Army cannot move out of Holdsworthy, and why the land they occupy cannot be turned over to housing. Holdsworthy has become a major warehousing and transport hub for the Army. In the past few years, a motza has been spent on upgrading their warehouse facilities along Moorebank Avenue. Currently there appears to be a very large warehousing complex being built on Heathcote Road, just south of the East Hills railway line. The Army also has a number of schools for specialist training spread about this complex. The Holdsworthy Live-Firing Range, which represents the majority of the land held by the army between Holdsworthy and Woronora River towards Heathcote is a heavily dissected sandstone plateau. If you were to spread a blanket over the area, it would pass over more voids than solid ground. The civil engineering costs to make the area suitable for civilian use would be astronomical. Further, who knows how many items of unexploded ordnance are on the range, and where each one is? One Hundred years later, ordnance is still being unearthed on the Western Front. The simple answer to the question "Why not move west of the Ranges? " is one word - WATER. Where is the water to come from to supply a new small city which, along with the members of the Army itself, would have to support all the ancilliary services required by a modern city - retail, financial, educational, maintenance and recreational services? Anyone that questions the worth of a project is instantly cast as being anti-jobs anti-community anti-progress. When the bubble busts you are left with a lot of empty shops and poisoned environment. Bit of a different story these days. The base commander tried to make a grab for more airspace up into the Valley a couple of years ago. Our club sent him a chart marked with his new airspace, it went from high tide mark to New Zealand. OMU The reason you state that residential housing can't be built on the i believe the now unused range is exactly why the area would make a great airport the buffer around it would be huge. Lot of towns out west with a river to move the RAAF to.
