Is it a rule or just a convention that you undertake all training hours at the same school/CFI?

 

If not, how does your log book work - can you "take it" from one school to the other?

No you can go to another school if the current one isn't working out or you need to relocate, and take your logbook, its yours.

 

Student records/progress notes might be a different matter but when I relocated interstate I had my old school mail my records to my new school, to maintain provenance so to speak.

Get your flying school to "authenticate/ certify" your flying summaries by stamping and signing it for you. Nev

Don't let them " take it", it is your property not theirs. Just take it with you every time you fly. After you qualify, don't bother taking it, ( I leave mine at home and fill it out when I get home).

HITC - used to fill out my log book and sign off on everyone of my flights when I was his student. He then gave me my book back for safe keeping.

 

Some students like to keep their log book at the school, it should be the students choice though.

OK - so now I'm really showing my ignorance - only have 4 hrs - have joined RAaus - but no mention by anyone of an actual log book. Coming from a scuba background there were pretty standard format log books - is there a standard format for the RPL? and where should I get one? Dave at the Oaks is keeping what I assume are student records/progress notes.

You can buy them online or from various pilot stores, i believe RA-AUS sell them on their website and no doubt Ian would have them here on the Clear Prop store. A few different brands but it's all pretty much the same. Ask your instructor, he may have new ones ready to sell you, but you really should be filling it out each flight it is a required/legal document. From memory the Ops Manual requires us to carry it, or a photocopy of the latest page, doubt many do. CASA's requirement is you can produce it at a CASA office within X amount of hours (24 from memory).

Ian's Pilot store has a pack with some text books but couldn't find the stand alone log book. RA-AUS Store has one too, although if you are going onto RPL then I'd get the Aviation Theory Centre or ASA one

I have the same log book that is from the student pack that Ian sells. It is great and will last for ever.

Is that true that we have to carry it? I leave my logbook at home with my maintenance log and just keep a little notebook with me that I note my hours, landings, locations flown ect and then once I've finished my trip I will fill in my logbook at home from my notebook.

If we are required to have a photocopy of the last page that would be a nuisance doing a new photocopy after each session. I personally don't like the idea of flying with my logbook as if I do stuff up and things go south how on earth can anyone check anything if my flight history goes up in smoke?

I don't think the ops manual says you have to carry your log book at all. Happy to be corrected if wrong. When you give advice that something is compulsory it's always good to give a reference.

I said from memory! (which isn't always correct).

 

The Ops manual says you need to be able to produce it within 72 hours, the CASA Ramp checklist suggests you have a photocopy of the last flight review from your log book.

Now that the "last flight review" is on the RA-Aus certificate, hopefully we don't need that extra paperwork to carry around. ?

You never needed to. CASA just wanted a photo copy carried to make their own job easier. It has never been a legal requirement. If they really want to follow up about your BFR they could have done it later.
