Ira Heilveil Posted May 2, 2015 Posted May 2, 2015 The term “situational awareness” originally referred to knowing where one was in space at any particular moment and remaining vigilant when it comes to bumping into things such as other airplanes and mountains. As have so many things in flying and life, it has come to mean much more. http://cftblog.com/?p=1001 1
Gnarly Gnu Posted May 3, 2015 Posted May 3, 2015 Thanks Ira, acronyms are great.... provided you can remember what each letter stands for! 2
Birdseye Posted May 3, 2015 Posted May 3, 2015 We had one for radio failure - CATCUM - I can remember the acronym after 35 years, but these days, apart from the C for Continue, not what it stood for!
facthunter Posted May 4, 2015 Posted May 4, 2015 I don't go for acronym's. Learn the basic list and it should make SENSE, not just be a memory item. Situational awareness isn't much about navigation. It's about what you have going for you, ( which encompasses what you DON'T have going for you as well) so you plan optimally how to manage your situation in the most safe manner. Nev
Birdseye Posted May 4, 2015 Posted May 4, 2015 It could be said that situational awareness is about being ahead of the aeroplane and ready for any new event.
facthunter Posted May 4, 2015 Posted May 4, 2015 Like if you are LOW (and SLOW) you are running out of options. Nev
Birdseye Posted May 4, 2015 Posted May 4, 2015 Or like finding your chosen landing field has wires across it, that sort of thing. 1
