Hi There,

After looking around for a few years and researching what would be a good compromise to do video mapping I ending up using the Garmin VIRB.

I tried the GoPro and I wasn't very happy with it.

- hard work to manually synchronise track and video

- not really user friendly

The VIRB has an inbuilt GPS with some extra sensors that are nice for aviation videos.

I found the VIRB working good and VIRB Edit is a pretty good program.

The sensors or not always on the money but most of the time it's good.

Here is a short video I made using 2 Garmin VIRB Elite Cameras during a Nav with my instructor over Kakadu National Parc :

The equipment used :

- Garmin VIRB Elite with Prop filter

- VibeX mount for the vibrations

- Pre-edited in Garmin VIRB Elite

- Edited in Final Cut Pro X

Any of you guys using a similar setup ?

Happy days !

Xavier

Hi Xavier ,

Thanks for the interesting video, good to hear about comparisons of cameras. I would like to do set up like you have in the future.

Do you have power supplied to to the cameras or do they just run on batteries? How long do the batteries last?

Great place for training area by the way, how do you go for emergency landing practice?

I noticed your Savannah has its outer ailerons shortened, tell us why.

I enjoyed the vid, watched it a few times, I hope you pot more.

Cheers

Hi Rick,

The camera run on batteries, around 2.5 Hours, you can connect a battery pack to it, that will make the setup a bit more complicated but its possible.

For emergency landing practice, we are always on the look and also part of the "every 10 miles CLEAROFF" check is the F for Force landing where we pick up a spot just in case every 10 miles.

Concerning the outer ailerons shortened I don't know enough about it, I can only tell you that this Savannah was one of the first VG built by the previous ICP dealer Tom Abell in 2003.

How is the outer ailerons supposed to look like ?

Cheers,

Xavier

Hi Xavier

The Sav ailerons continue about 250 or 300mm past the outer hang bracket. Your ones are clipped off at the outer hang bracket.

Your Sav -----------------------------------------------------------------------My Sav (or any other Sav)

Who knows why it was done? maybe one side was damaged at the tip so was cut short instead of repairing and the other side done to match.

Maybe its a secret speed mod, does yours get an extra 5 kts? Nah doesnt look like it from your vid.

Maybe someone on this forum knows why.

Anyway, I look forward to seeing another vid from the far north.

Cheers

Rick
