Teckair Posted July 12, 2015 Posted July 12, 2015 All you have to do is check your Notams I don't think so, these were not not where they were supposed to be. How would a notam help? These were F 1 11s and years ago as we know it is not still happening. I know of one private airfield they used to roar over despite the club writing letters to RAF, they felt they were being harassed deliberately.
rhysmcc Posted July 12, 2015 Posted July 12, 2015 I've often seen LJR NOTAMS over Atherton tablelands and over the reef, usually USAF out of Townsville returning from sorties further north. 1
Guest Andys@coffs Posted July 12, 2015 Posted July 12, 2015 The first time I saw one up close was in the Atherton Tablelands, I rang the airforce about it and was told it would not have been there, so where is a LJR? my answer would be everywhere. It happened another time at Childers and I was told the same thing "it wouldn't have been there". It appeared as though these guys were going where ever they felt like. As for your comments about radar that is not what the Air Force said, I was told the F 1 11 does not have a radar that can see other aircraft. I was told the pilots relied on see and be seen to avoid other aircraft. All this at 400 kts and low level it is a wonder nobody got taken out by these cowboys. F111 Australian versions had a ground attack radar...it was optimised (with the tech available at that time) for ground targets........ It was an essential part of the navigation system using regular known ground returns as updates for the gyro based nav systems......It had an air mode which tightened up the beam in elevation to cut out the ground returns but I suspect (not fact just supposition) that it was rarely used in air mode..... My supposition as a radtech at the time was that I for one would not have wanted to rely on that beast to find an airborne jabiru, all composite other than the engine..... It also had 2 Terrain following Radars but these had no mechanism for displaying returns in a way that did anything other than help it avoid cumulus granitus.
turboplanner Posted July 13, 2015 Posted July 13, 2015 Thank god for the X spurts. You don't need them Teck, just some more training on how to use the incident reporting system regarding your post #54 (assuming you had used Notams first) We may of course now be talking about ancient history, since weapons systems have changed since the F111, but can you imagine the uproar if a low flying military aircraft cleaned up ANYTHING, even down to Drifters and Thrusters, and it was either outside one of the dozens of LJRs around Australia, or notification hadn't been given.
