ave8rr Posted July 19, 2015 Posted July 19, 2015 1 person has died in a light plane crash at Wedderburn airfield. https://au.news.yahoo.com/nsw/a/28916781/one-dead-in-sydney-light-plane-crash/ Condolences to the family.
Roundsounds Posted July 19, 2015 Posted July 19, 2015 From the bit of footage on the news flash, it looked a bit like a Glasair II. 2
Teckair Posted July 19, 2015 Posted July 19, 2015 No the news said it was a Cessna and what is the chance they would be wrong? 1 1
Gribble Posted July 19, 2015 Posted July 19, 2015 Ch7 said it was a homebuilt Cessna. Is that a new low in crash reporting?
cooperplace Posted July 19, 2015 Posted July 19, 2015 Very sad. From the photos, that strip seems to be surrounded by dense bushland. 1
ayavner Posted July 19, 2015 Posted July 19, 2015 Very sad. From the photos, that strip seems to be surrounded by dense bushland. It is, and the requirement to avoid flying over the township for noise abatement can cause some fairly high and tight circuits from what I've heard. Not saying that was a factor here, just to add to your comment.
barramundi Posted July 19, 2015 Posted July 19, 2015 condolences to the family and regards to the injured person...very sad! 1
Aldo Posted July 19, 2015 Posted July 19, 2015 Just heard on 9 it is now two (2) deceased not sure how accurate that is though. Aldo
Guest ozzie Posted July 19, 2015 Posted July 19, 2015 Very sad. From the photos, that strip seems to be surrounded by dense bushland. Pretty much no outs there.
Jabiru7252 Posted July 19, 2015 Posted July 19, 2015 In the same article they call it a Cessna and a amateur homebuilt that was 30 years old. Dickhead media. 1
Vagabond Posted July 19, 2015 Posted July 19, 2015 I flew over Wedderburn at 4.35pm & weather was perfect. Just saying.
old man emu Posted July 19, 2015 Posted July 19, 2015 It's a bugger of a strip. Basically North-South, so no matter from which direction the wind blow, you'll have a cross wind. It has been cut out of real tiger country and as you can see from the aerial view, there's no place to go but into the trees if you have an EFOT (not that I know if this was the case here). Those tree have captured a few airplanes in he past. And when I hear the reported saying that it was a Cessna, I nearly threw my slipper at the TV. Bloody reporters! They almost make me believe that Bronwyn Bishop pays for her travel out of her own pocket. OME 1
johncarlo Posted July 19, 2015 Posted July 19, 2015 My instructor has a hanger there and I did some training there. There can be a very strong wind corridor because of the terrain and trees.
jakej Posted July 19, 2015 Posted July 19, 2015 From the bit of footage on the news flash, it looked a bit like a Glasair II. Glasair 1 actually - I know of the aircraft, she will be sadly missed. 1 1
Roundsounds Posted July 19, 2015 Posted July 19, 2015 Glasair 1 actually - I know of the aircraft, she will be sadly missed. Thanks Jake, very sad indeed. The CASA register records the aircraft as a SH-2Ft which I assumed to be a Glasair 2.
turboplanner Posted July 19, 2015 Posted July 19, 2015 Some more information alleging she stalled on approach. http://www.smh.com.au/nsw/pilot-dead-after-light-plane-crash-passenger-critically-injured-20150719-gifrzn
mkennard Posted July 19, 2015 Posted July 19, 2015 Circuits can be a challenge since there are some neighbours who complain a lot. Usually have to slip it in. I'm pulling power earlier in the circuit to get in these days. The J230 doesn't want to land some times. Turning base you really have to make sure you are coordinated. As someone else said, not hard to get a cross wind and with all the trees and hangers, fun times.
ayavner Posted July 19, 2015 Posted July 19, 2015 The runway is a kilometre long, Dr Anderson said. "It's definitely an adequate runway ... probably the best north-south runway outside of Mascot [airport]," he said. huh?? What about Wollongong, also N-S and its 1800m... and doesn't have massive trees all around the approach. 1
Roundsounds Posted July 19, 2015 Posted July 19, 2015 Wedderburn certainly isn't my favourite airfield due to many reasons, but you can always exercise your right not to use it if you consider it to be unsafe. 2
jetjr Posted July 19, 2015 Posted July 19, 2015 You could see "Glasair" written on it in news footage! "30 yr old homebuilt Cessna" in a few news reports Another sad day for light aviation. 2
ayavner Posted July 20, 2015 Posted July 20, 2015 I think you're meant to be a club member to use it anyway if I recall? anyway, hoping we get more info soon on this tragedy. so sad :(
jakej Posted July 20, 2015 Posted July 20, 2015 Thanks Jake, very sad indeed. The CASA register records the aircraft as a SH-2Ft which I assumed to be a Glasair 2. Some areas of Casa have been utterly incompetent IMO, a list of all of this type was given to them, with serial & model numbers, many years ago. Then we (aircraft owners) had forms that we had to fill in to 'bring records up to date'. Nothing significant changed, some Glasair III's were even listed as PA-32 (actually Piper designation) & there are errors in the Registrations data everywhere. 1
Guest ozzie Posted July 20, 2015 Posted July 20, 2015 Sounds like another mob i had experience with recently.

And it's CASA auditing and telling RAA to get it's act together....rather hypocrytical then..... 3
