I dont know how many members are interested in Amphibian aircraft. Problem not to many. I have always had a passion for amphibian, and as a kid at Nambucca Heads N.S.W. witnessed the landing in bad weather of a 1940 Walrus Amphibian, a giant bi-plane with a 750 H.P. Radial engine up the back pushing. It fired my imigation for the rest of my life. I had the good fortune many years later in New Zealand to get involved with a homebuilt project a Volmer Sportsman amphibian. 2 seater all wood with Aeronca Champ wings and an O200 100 h.p. Contentional engine up the back pushing. In the end I purchased the aircraft, and after some repairs got the Volmer flying again. I decided to make a movie about the Volmer and the fun and fears of water flying. So here is a link to it on U tube https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Mns83KflLxU As they say in aviation."The hardest thing about flying is the ground! This also applies to water flying. The hardest part about water flying is the water!

Hope you enjoy the movie.

Nicely presented clip. Welcome aboard . You look as though you are enjoying it.Nev

Thanks for the comments. The Volmer was a fun amphibian to fly. Surly a stick and rudder aeroplane but offered a lot of freedom, even though my flying mates refered to it as THE DRUNK DUCK.

What's the open sea takeoff panic button?

It's the button you are looking for when you are coming up-on the step at 40kts and have a beer bottle come through the bottom of the forward step hull followed by gallons of sea water. I have never tried a Tibetan prayer wheel it could well work!

Hi volmer,

Seaplane flying is alive and well in the whitsundays. I learnt with a Drifter on Full lotus amphib floats and now have a zenair 701 on puddlejumper amphibs. We call it BOB as in Best of Both, flying and boating. Sometimes it seems to be worst of both. But when its good, its fantstic. Adds a whole new dimension to flying.

Havent been for the swim Yet!

Thank you for your comments and the beautiful picture of the screne setting with that Zenair on floats. Must be a dream come true with that wing and the slot/slats. Wonderful for getting up on the step. Ok about the Drifter. I did some Instructor training on the Drifter at Boona. Good aeroplane. Must be the best spinning aeroplane I have evey flow. My doe's it spins, slightly below the vetrical which I had never encoutered. I had a Tiger Mother for a long time and the Tiger spinning characterist were British. PiP PiP tallo ho the fox stuff. But the Drifter really is a challenging aeroplane when it comes to spinning. I did spinning for my CPL flight test in a PA 28 Cherokee and it reminded me of the Drifter. The trouble with the Cherokee is it will high speed stall on recovery if you are not VERY quick with the recovery procedures. Just the same as a P51 Mustang. Don't think I would try it with full Lotus floats!!. Glad you liked the video on the Volmer. Great old work horse and a very safe aeroplane to fly. It will take quite a bit of pushingment on land and sea before it gives up. thanks Volmer

Great wisdom from Henry Ford. Not suprising as he was a vey clever man, who also dabbled in aircraft design. Thanks for posting it.

The Ford company, due to Henry being interested in this, became quite a plane manufacturer. In 1927, Ford built the world's first aeroplane production line.
