Not off topic - it is about planes. I watched this episode too. 27 planes in one hangar! The house was a bit avant-garde and looked worse in the flesh than on the plans, but it did have a fantastic glassed lounge / kitchen area to watch the airfield and a glassed section in the roof to view them flying over. My husband doesn't like "calamity Kevin" so he missed out on a bit of plane porn. I like watching Kevin to follow the mistakes people make and see the innovation. So glad I live in Qld after watching so many "snowed in, iced up, fogged in" episodes.

I saw that episode too (it's been on before) and loved it. Loved the house too. What a dream that would be, to build a new house on an airfield.

I would have built a cheaper house with a timber frame and bought another flying contraption with the spare cash!

I do not watch TV normally. A mate texted me and told me to turn it on as he thought the plane that they kept showing was like mine.

I have just now emailed him a Bill for the 25 mins of my life that I wasted whilst that show was on.

If he pays up without argument I shall use the money for fuel and take him for a fly. If he enjoyed that, he needs to get out more.

Come on now Geoff. Nothing wrong with Grand Designs, if you're not into architecture or the 3D CAD walkthrough, at least you can count how many times Kevin uses the word "bespoke" in each episode.

I watched it, & enjoyed it. But gee, you'd really have to want to live there to spend all that money. I wonder how many flyable days they get between gale force winds, torrential rain, & snowstorms? The large numbers of wind generators visible in the background suggests the wind must be pretty constant in that location.

Great house though, and a lovely little grass strip.

That house was not so different from some Aussie houses I have seen. British people don't seem to know how to build timber framed houses, although I lived in one in Shropshire for three years. steel framing is a good way to go in my opinion, especiall in windy conditions. Kevin Mc C is good value in my opinion, most of his worries are put in just to add drama to the show. What I really like is the way he goe on about having an architect, being essential and when an architect is involved it is usually an expensive cock up. One of his very early shows had an architect owner and the house was never completed.

I'd rather have a Materials Engineer help translate an Artists dream into a workable design than an Architect.

All an architect is is an artist who can't do art crossed with a wanna engineer who failed the entrance exams.

Bit harsh ... they are generally as good as most modern artists

You mean the ones that varnish turds and put condoms over religious statues of virgins?

That's like saying Stomach Cancer is as good as Liver Cancer...

I worked with architects for about 25 years and it is funny that nobody seems to think them any good, but they still seem to make a living. They would do well as priests. Another con trick.

many councils seem to require an architects sign off on non-pre-consented houses that are not of a "Standard" format that their inspectors can check in their sleep.

Despite engineers being involved in the design and materials selection.
