G'day all!

I've been a bit quiet on here lately due to a few reasons, one being that my wife and I have a new addition to our household... our daughter arrived 4 weeks ago which is pretty cool!

Now I was just wondering what others thought about how soon a little bub should be air borne, or in other words, how old should they be, for it to be safe for their little bodies to handle the pressures.

Also just strapping a car seat on the back seat, is that all legal? I could look up the reg's I guess, but I'm sure someone's been here before!

Thanks a million!

Hey Tomo,

Congrats mate. It's good to see I'm not alone. We had our first 5 weeks ago.

I remember there was a writeup in Australian Flying May-June 2015 about flying with children. Apparently a car baby seat is legal to use in an aircraft, if it is compliant with Australian standards AS/NZS 1754. There is info in CAAP 235-2

Biggest issue I can see is how to fit the top strap. The car has those mount points in the back, but I wouldn't think that the tie down points in the rear of a plane would be suitable.

I think as to age, it would depend on the baby. For me I'll wait till the 12 month mark. I also want to take him in the kid trailer behind my push bike and the advise is 12 months onwards as they can hold their heads up and deal with the bumps. Once I know he's ok in the trailer, I'll try the plane.

The other things the article mentioned were hydration, ear protection and dealing with changes in pressure. With the pressure issue, baby should be ok, unless they have a cold/ear infection. To deal with popping ears, the suggestions I've had are to use bottle or pacifier during altitude changes. That way they have something to suck/chew (Similar to an adult chewing gum.)

Anyway, hope this helps.

Onya Tomo. Guess your wife did a bit too, good on her too.

Are you going to be doing aerobatics in the family wagon? If not then the answer to how old would be different. Just like when to let them jump on a trampoline. Mine all three jumped on the trampoline once they could walk, guess that is why they are like they are now. I bet you could ask any number of do gooders for an answer to the how old question and you would get lots of answers between 10 and 30 to protect your baby from your evil obsession.

I agree 100% Robbo.

My 4 yr old girl wants daddy to fly her upside down!048_surrender.gif.737a6283dfb1349140cc8b959302f540.gif All I can think of is the expression on my dad's face when I first drove him around in a car and think how much worse will it be when she first straps me in to take me for an aerobatic flight?!

Rank you are spot on, you can wrap them up in cotton wool but what does it benefit. For me I wasn't comfortable flying with my kids until they could half talk and follow basic instructions (don't touch that, move your foot over there) which for my young boy was around 2 years. If I was flying in a four seater with mum I wouldn't mind flying with them younger albeit with a bit more care.

Can't stress enough the eardrum care, definitely don't take them if they are a bit blocked in the head and even when healthy still give them a dummy to chew for climb and descent. Baby muffs are available and well worth money spent.

Congrats Tomo and hope you are getting some sleep:thumb up:
