Breaking news tonight that a Turkish F-16 has shot down an aircraft that violated it's border with Syria.

I've watched the supposed footage of the aircraft going down and it's a Sukhoi Su-24 Fencer with wings fully extended.

Russia is operating Su-24's in Syria and the Syrian Air Force has them as well, so it's not known yet which country it belongs to. Eyewitness reports say both pilots ejected.

Cheers, Willie.

Russia has said that it's one of theirs. They're claiming it was in Syrian airspace, and was most likely brought down from a ground strike. Two locals were supposed to be injured from falling debris.

It must have been very close to the border as it has crashed in Syria.

Watching the coverage live on Russian media is interesting. There's reports from Syrian rebels that one pilot has been killed by their ground forces, but it's unconfirmed at this stage. So far, they've had one Russian and two Australian analysts commentating. The bloke from the Central Queensland University seems to think it was brought down from the ground. The lady from Canberra seems to be very critical of Turkey, but not adding much to as how it happened.

Russian FM, Sergey Lavrov, is off to Turkey tommorrow to sort it out.

Can't see the image, FT. Is it my computer or did the upload not work?

Cheers, Willie.

That's just an image with squiggly lines, FT. Do you have a link to the parent article with some context.

Cheers, Willie.

Thanks for the explanation; I figured as much, but as I said, do you have a link to the site or article associated with the graphic. It would be interesting to read a bit more about it.

Putin: Downing of Russian jet a 'stab in the back by accomplices of terrorists'

Russian President Vladimir Putin has called the downing of a Russian jet at the Turkey-Syria border "a stab in the back by the accomplices of terrorists".

He was speaking live on state-owned TV channel Rossiya 24.

Sometimes the Twittersphere can be misleading. Not knowing who Zaid Benjamin and Radio Sawa are, I'll see if I can find an official Turkish Government posting of the flight path depicted in the image.

Vlad's not impressed; does that mean the pipeline deal with Turkey is off?

apparently NATO drop these before hitting oil tankers

I guess they think civilians are press ganged into driving the trucks and they want to give them a chance.

It's not NATO. It's a coalition of countries and close to half of them just happen to be NATO members. As far as I understand it, it's a US led coalition, not under the umbrella of NATO.

They are now saying the Syrian army have rescued one of the pilots and he will be transferred to a Russian base shortly.

As we are aware the other one is no longer with us.

I must say if I was flying over that area and was shot down I would not even eject I would just go down with the aircraft. At least its instant and would not be in a slow brutal way in the hands if the is scum.

Also feel for the crew member that was killed when the rescue chopper was shot up.

Apparently the crew member rescued was the navigator and the pilot was killed. Along with the marine killed in the Mi-8, all three have been awarded the Star of Hero of the Russian Federation, the nation's highest honour.

News reports show the chopper being hit by a U.S. supplied TOW missile fired by the so called 'moderate' free Syrian Army. Whether that's true or not is another thing.

Cheers, Willie.

The Turks have really screwed the pooch on this one.

The Russians hadn't proved all that determined to concentrate on ISIS before. The Egypt A320 bombing would have focused their attention quite nicely then Turkey goes trigger happy because the Russian plane took a 4km shortcut over their territory. Now Vlad is looking to do some shirt-fronting on Turkey which is a NATO member.

As an aside... apparently some of these "moderate" rebel groups are affiliated with Al Quaeda. Since when did they become "good guys" in the Western media?

The mob that killed the pilot were identified by their accents as Syrian Turkmen, who are supported by the Turkish Government and associated with Al Quaeda. It's a tangled web we've woven.

Putin's always adept at sending strong messages. The missile cruiser 'Moskva' has anchored of the coast of Latakia and they've sent S-400 anti-air missile batteries there as well. The cruiser has the Naval version of the S-300 anti-aircraft missile, so I guess the message is, do it again and we'll blow your F-16's out of the sky.

Also, all missions will have fighter escort from now on, which probably should have been the case from the start.

It seems a stupid reaction to 17 seconds of straying into the airspace, especially given Erdogan's performance when the Syrians shot down the Turkish F-4 Phantom under similar circumstances.

Obama shot himself in the foot today in a statement supporting Turkey in shooting down the aircraft. He said 'Every country has the right to defend it's territory and airspace'. So 'every country' would include Syria having every legal right to fight all armed insurrection within it's borders, whether foreign backed or not. But hang on, hasn't Obama spent the last four years telling us Assad is very, very, naughty for doing just that.

They must think we're completly stupid.

Putin would not dare escalate this one as Turkey is a NATO country unlike the Ukraine, on a side note, we were talking to our son last night in Ivanovo and he said that there is talk of banning all goods from Turkey...problem is our son told us, that most of their clothing comes from Turkey....well the cheaper stuff which most of the poorer Russians buy...if this happens it will make it even harder for the average Russian but as we have seen before Putin doesn't really care about any of that...he will do it to show everyone how tuff he is...God help them...I wish we could bring Dan and my wife's parents here to live..

Plenty of avenues around the planet for cheap clothing. Ever looked at the label on Katies stuff for country of origin? Unfortunately for Turkeyu the gas supply market is pretty well sewn up between Russsia and Iran. Good luck with that Erdogan

The aircraft were only over Turkish airspace for a very short time not long enough to issue 10 warnings as claimed by the look of things they were actually leaving when hit . I think it more likely the Turks don't like their oil trucks shot up and cheap oil supply cut off.

That reminds me of what Secretary of State, John Kerry, said in relation to Crimea being annexed to Russia after an overwhelming referendum from the Crimean people. It still stands out in World history as a territory gained with just one life lost (a trigger happy Ukrainian). It is impossible to gain such a territory without there being a fight unless the people in Crimea wanted to be loosed from Ukraine which did little for Crimea.

Then John Kerry said this:

"You just don't in the 21st century behave in 19th century fashion by invading another country on a completely trumped up pre-text"

The United States would never do such a "19th century" thing "on a completely trumped up pre-text", would they?
