Kamloops Posted November 27, 2015 Posted November 27, 2015 Had some odd discussions as of late. Remember the good old days in aviation when people put floats on planes with 90 hp. Some had powerful ones with 140 or 150 hp. Well now a few are spewing off how 230 hp in a little 4 place isn't sufficient. Made me chuckle is all. So had any odd aviation chats lately....share them here if you want to. 1
facthunter Posted November 27, 2015 Posted November 27, 2015 Big wing and big propellers with torquey motors can lift a lot with smaller horsepower figures, but they are not fast. The genuine rotary motors are a good example of that. Gnome et Rhone and Le Rhone and Clerget , Siemens Halske, Bentley BR2.etc. Little toothpick props only pull clean planes fast on cool days. Nev 1
Kamloops Posted November 27, 2015 Author Posted November 27, 2015 This is a Cessna 182 conversion to floats. 1
Kamloops Posted November 28, 2015 Author Posted November 28, 2015 Some odd things get said to me. That was just one. I was also asked recently why I am so damn paranoid that I carry a portable radio. I think it is just being prepared....not paranoia.
Earl Pike Posted November 29, 2015 Posted November 29, 2015 How about bugger all wings, huge motor and a giant fan for a prop. The S.6b was the fastest thing in the world in the 1930s, 400 plus mph. The air frame was a radiator for the huge engine,(predecessor of the Merlin and the Griffon), which had an operating life of 5 hours. In fact it was mainly an engine that floated and flew. And it was the last winner of the Schnieder Trophy. 1
facthunter Posted November 29, 2015 Posted November 29, 2015 Giant fixed pitch prop as well. The torque buried one float often and you couldn't get it to plane. Nev 1
