Is it practical to fly cross-country without an ASIC card?

Hi folks!

I'm a low hours flyer excitedly contemplating a cross-country flight to bring my first, newly purchased (RAA registered) aircraft home. However, I don't have an ASIC card and unfortunately struggle to meet the criteria for getting one owing to my employment/residential history over the last decade.

I'd like to ask more experienced aviators how realistic would it be to plan and execute a flight hopping between minor or private airstrips -given the need for fuel, and the occasional meal along the way... I would be happy to roll a swag out under the wing at night :)

Would be flying from South East Queensland up to the Top End.

All advice, suggestions welcome

Alan

Doubt you would have any problems with private strips or minor airports.

Just when your planning it read the ersa and see if there security controlled.

I don't see how employment or living circumstances would affect the application as its a criminal history check.

Hi Robbo: Thanks for your response. Good to know the trip should be possible with adequate planning:

To cover periods of overseas work/residence ASIC applicants need to provide police reports from those countries: Unfortunately in some cases that is simply not possible.

Hmmm you sure?

It all goes through crimtrac now and thats basically interpol, asio, state police, federal police etc etc.

It is not your job to get the reports, thats why you pay them the money.

I could be wrong and I most likelly am but I have never heard of this.

I fly regional Vic and outback NSW and QLD without the need for an ASIC card. Have even flown into 2 security airports with no issues, just be aware that if you leave airside you may have a problem getting back.

The main benefits of ASIC for me is ( in order of importance ) .... convenient refuelling( Avgas ) , toilets , food if available , and security if leaving aircraft overnight , accomodation . If using Mogas you will find some inconveniences . ( refusal to carry fuel etc. ) Without knowing your aircraft /endurance etc. difficult to advise ,but in general terms other issues ,weather , airspace etc. are the same for all of us ..... Gladstone is also an ASIC requirement and they are not flyer friendly. If you need fuel in that area Avgas is availabl at Old Station.

Mogas if I am around at Rodds Bay I can help there. Ph 0749750209

Longreach , Emerald, Cunnamulla, Hughenden and Charleville also require an ASIC , there may be others .... Bob .

You may need it ! but I have never shown it or been asked for it but have had it since its inception and I never show it, I put it in my pocket so it can't be seen,

If it is a one off trip NT read through that link that gnu put up. If you don't have a frequent need for an ASIC the airport operators are required to organise an escort for you, of course it might be worth a ring around to see which ones will help you out beforehand!

"Escort".........can see you waiting there, for god knows how long. ( they won't be happy .....asic folks ) The whole asic thing is a joke. ( entry / exit gates are coded, fences are 900

high or less, in places ) Have used many a asic airport, never ever been challenged ( several times forgot to hang it around my neck, but had it in cockpit ) it's total cr!p.

I totally agree Russ, but I still have one too mainly because knowing my luck I would be the one that got caught without one and would be the one they made an example of:doh:

The issue of 'getting back' should not be underestimated . It happened to me at Longreach a few years ago. Had a coffee with one of the local chopper pilots(outside the fence) and later asked him for gate code . He said he feared repercussions if he told me , telling me I must ring the authorised officer , who it seems had instilled fear into local operators for trying to usurp his authority . Chopper pilot studied the current ASIC around my neck, but still no go . If I had had no current card, I suspect I would be still waiting to get back in today . There are dangers in assuming that what works one day , will work the next . All it needs is for you to be in the wrong place, when someone else is having a bad day . Most here ,including me ,find the system abhorrent, but paying the $200 is better than the $5000 fine . One day , someone will be made an example of ,particularly if it finally dawns on them, that many are not 'legal' . I would also be careful about relying on small excerpts of relevant legislation , together with your interpretation about the meaning, for example , of a particular word . There is much reading on this matter in Comlaw, if you have the time and energy, but there is no doubt what the intention of the legislation is . Caveat Emptor ..... Bob

Unfortunately, it is an offence to fail to display it...they are doing random ramp checks so bewRe the strict liability offence.

I was checked at Deniliquin by AFP.

I don't understand why people don't just pay the $200 like most people do, then you would not have to ask questions like this and take risks.

Well firstly I have paid my 200$ I am due again now actually. BUT 200$ is 200$ and for a lot of us it adds up, personally that is over a months worth of flying fuel which isn't to be sneezed at. I get sick of people saying "you payed x amount on a plane just pay the extra 2 or 3 or 4 hundred dollars and be done with it" which really annoys me, yes I payed x amount on a plane BUT I still have a wife and kids and "spare" money isn't easily had and if I do get spare I would rather spend it on fuel!

If you aren't flying to security controlled airports what risk is there? And if you have to occasionally, ring up and get an escort organised.

And it isn't only money, I have to print out all the paperwork and run into town to get it all signed off by a jp and it is a bit of a process. I don't see why it couldn't be done similar to the working with children check through the local rms, it would make it a whole lot simpler. On top of that for renewals if you haven't changed your name or address why the necessity of repeating everything!

I wish they would streamline it and make everyone pay it, why should we have to fork out money to do our job and people who have the pleasure of doing it for fun doesent have to!

An airport is an airport no matter how big it is. You could load up an RA aircraft with "material" that could cause as much damage as something larger.

If someone isn't flying to a security controlled airport why on earth should they pay? Remember they are not getting paid for the pleasure of it. Talk of making everyone pay because you have to seems a bit self centred and selfish

Doesen't matter, You choose to hold a licence same as a commercial or private pilot.

You choose to fly, therefore you should have an asic.

Thats like saying mr bad man from syria can gets his ra licence at a small airport with no security check and hire a plane from a small airport and then cause havoc.

I believe the asic shouldn't be based on access to a security controlled airport but instead a high level background check on you and your eligibility to hold a pilots licence.
