storchy neil Posted February 27, 2016 Posted February 27, 2016 do we as in you and I need the PLB in aircraft as I have said before don't take off without it neil 1
KRviator Posted February 28, 2016 Posted February 28, 2016 You still need to be alive and able to activate it. Even a fixed ELT with a G switch isn't guaranteed to work. 1
jetjr Posted February 28, 2016 Posted February 28, 2016 Not when doing circuits Need it for trips over 50nm?? From home Logic says take one every time, 5 nm is a big area to search and find you 1

cooperplace Posted February 28, 2016 Posted February 28, 2016 does anyone know what sort of aircraft it was?
ave8rr Posted February 28, 2016 Posted February 28, 2016 And sadly this aircraft was involved in an emergency landing a few years back. http://www.recreationalflying.com/threads/plane-makes-forced-landing-in-blue-mountains.1801 Condolences to family and friends. By all accounts the pilot was very experienced. 1
cooperplace Posted February 28, 2016 Posted February 28, 2016 and it seems that he was an instructor, very experienced. 1
rankamateur Posted February 28, 2016 Posted February 28, 2016 and it seems that he was an instructor, very experienced. I might misunderstand the life of an instructor, BUT why do instructors need to wear out their plane doing circuits unless they are trying to work out some issue with the plane? Perhaps he was a retired instructor.
facthunter Posted February 28, 2016 Posted February 28, 2016 I wouldn't necessarily make the connection. Instructors don't get a lot of actual flying in, unless they are a lot different to me. The students do most of the flying. Nev 2
Thirsty Posted February 28, 2016 Posted February 28, 2016 I was an instructor and I used to do circuits on my own - you get to practice almost everything in a circuit rather than just flying aimlessly around. 1 2
