Guest extralite Posted March 15, 2016 Posted March 15, 2016 Seems that every accident posted here follows pretty much the same pattern of discussion so i wondering if a sticky outlining what is acceptable and isnt would stop some of the negative sentiment? 1. Link to accident posted. 2. People post some more information regarding conditions, type of aircraft etc. Wondering if there may be contributing factors, particularly if it affects their own aircraft type. 3. Someone, often but not always someone who knows those involved takes offence at the "speculation" on behalf of families that might read/media might read etc and claims moral high ground. 4. Someone defends the right to discuss accidents on a forum. 5. Insults begin to fly while in essence both parties have legitimate points of view. So if we had a sticky that either said this is a forum for discussion and speculation and it is permitted, or it isnt, that may clear that up and stop some of the arguments? For those that disagree, there is noone forcing to anyone to click on the link. Something simple such as "discussion of possible contributing factors is/is not allowed. Worth doing? Nobody likes seeing arguments on here.
Bats Posted March 15, 2016 Posted March 15, 2016 Good idea, although my experience with other forums has been that 4 gets replaced with "Someone refers the poster to the forum rules" and 5 follows regardless. Those who are emotionally invested in a point of view often believe that they are justified in dispensing with polite debate. I think I've made my viewpoint clear in the recent thread, the alternative is something insipid and largely valueless as a learning exercise i.m.o. A case in point is the otherwise excellent Vansairforce site which absolutely bans accident discussion. Forget learning anything from another's misfortune, you need to trawl through other forums for that, where the posters may not (don't) have the same level of expertise and familiarity with the aircraft concerned. Shades of, "those who ignore history's lessons are condemned to repeat its mistakes". 1
Guest extralite Posted March 15, 2016 Posted March 15, 2016 Agreed with you in I personally feel that more can be learned by discussion, even though obviously have to pick and choose what to give credit to. But then if its not allowed, happy to abide by that too. As long as everyone is clear. Case in point is is the PPrune forum where the likely causes of the Air Asia and Air France accidents were "speculated" about by those familiar with the type a long time before the report and maybe that helped other pilots knowledge when they encountered the same scenario. Ultimately up to the mods, but a sticky would certainly help avoid the friction.
pmccarthy Posted March 15, 2016 Posted March 15, 2016 Many on this site are intensely interested in the cause of accidents, particularly of their aircraft type. I have learned a lot from the discussion of accidents here over the years. Speculation is useful, provided it is technically based and not libellous. 6
Admin Posted March 15, 2016 Posted March 15, 2016 There was a sticky about all this but I just noticed that it is not there anymore...will have to find it and restick it. It was very good and written by the late Tony Hayes
Admin Posted March 15, 2016 Posted March 15, 2016 I have added the site rules about accidents and incidents to the sticky in this forum...Tony Hayes helped me to write these many years ago.
