I think they need to try and explain better, what was so hard about making a geared turbo fan?

 

Turbo props have been doing it for years, in fact I'm sure there has already been geared turbo fans for a while...?

I agree pylone500. I would have thought all big turbo fans would have to be geared, those huge fans can't be running at the same rpm as the turbine. Maybe it is a more efficient gearbox.

High bypass turbofans have multiple turbines on concentric shafts driving different sections of compressor/fans.
