New PPL. First post.

Given the spectacular blue day in Sydney on Sunday, I decided that I would take take the kids on a harbour scenic. Weather clear, harbour spectacular with all the water traffic out on a sunny Sunday.

All went well, no problem with clearance, with landings on 34 and takeoffs on 25 out of YSSY.

On the way back from from Long Reef to Hornsby at 2500, just north of the 700ft step, there is a A380 on descent into Sydney. No more than 1000ft above my height and descending.

I start mentally looking up everything I knew about wake turbulence. Take-off before take-off point - no use. Land after landing point - no use. Stay above flight path - not an option. Five minute delay - well possibly. In the end just decide to descend to 2000, turn a little to the right, and be ready for anything. Reading on the ground seems to suggest that 1000ft of vertical clearance should be just fine.

Store that info for next time.

had my first flights in a 380 (Emirates) at Easter this year (a week either side of Easter in NZ, for Wanaka airshow) = holy cow, what an aircraft. first impression up close is the size of the tailfeathers - crikey they are BIG...

second impression, the width of the cabin (cattle class, of course) - with a movie running on the back of each headrest, I watched ten different movies....pity about the lack of earphones, but hey...fun!

biggest impression = the power of those big engines - never felt acceleration like it, huge grunt and it just kept going, I thought it would taper off but it kept pushing you into the seat right up to rotate

big thrill was being allowed to have a chat with the flightcrew on leaving the aircraft - in their office! one of the pilots (an Aussie) said he'd heard a lot about Drifters and was going to hunt one up - I told him they're perfect for working on your "stick and rudder skills" - they both thought that was bloody funny!!!

oh yeah, before I forget - a big welcome to inas, g'day m8.

Quite a few aussies flew (and fly) for Emirates. One notable F/O I flew with was on the first A-380 course. Haven't heard any bad reports about the airline from any of them. Nev
