Fuel problem...AvGas

Us folks in the country can no longer get deliveries of fuel to the farm in '44s' (220 litre) drums.. So I'm assuming the same applied to AvGas deliveries; i.e. you cant get them; or at least you cant get them re-filled.

 

So what are Jab owners and others that use AvGas doing about having fuel on their home-strips?

What's the go with 44s? I tried in vain a few months ago to try to find out how to get them. No one could give me a definitive answer on how to do it, but no one said you couldn't either.

If you want the heavy duty 44's then go to a honey supplier, they are no longer allowed to use steel and have changed to stainless, if you want the tinny ones then the local oil wholesaler should be able to assist if you ask them nicely, same goes for 60lt drums.

I think Bushpilot is saying that the powers that be, are refuseing to fill 44's

 

just like trying to put 2L of mogas in a empty coke botle at the local servo,

 

They don't like it.

 

One would think that if they have stopped useing 44's, then there would be a replacment.

OK. It seems that the issue is that OH&S rules say that the bulk delivery guys are no longer allowed to fill 44s. So if you want fuel delivered, you have to have bulk tanks with a mechanism allowing filling from the bottom. (So the delivery guys dont have to climb..).

 

Maybe 44s of AvGas can still be collected full from the supply depot, then swapped for full ones.. I dont know; but Im assuming someone on this forum can tell me. Otherwise I'll chase down the supplier to the local public airfield and see what I can find out there.

The aerial super spreaders, crop sprayers and i would think, some of the fire bombers, all of which quite often have to operate from isolated strips, must be able to get their fuel in 200ltr [ 44 gal ] drums or have some arangements for Avgas.

 

Will check on this in the next couple of days.

Here's a spin for you fellas!!! 6 months ago I fueled up at Woolworths servo in Orange (shop a docket), I had 6 steel jerries and was roused on by the attendant for filling them in an open box trailer. I was told only specialised servos with proper earth straps are allowed to fill jerries and this has been the law for a couple of years, I must be a mushroom as this is the first I have heard of this. The attendant told me that even though my drums were approved they still needed to be grounded. It is good practice and we have been doing it for donkeys years in aviation and by the looks of things it has caught up with the public fuel bowsers now, I bet half of the fuel attendants dont even know about the amendments to legislation within the industry that employs them. With this now in practice how long is it going to be before our cars are earthed before refueling??? Get's you thinking, hey wot!

Our local airport will not allow you to fill plastic jerry cans with avgas, but I can do that by using the code to get in the gate and doing it myself, and they know about this. They will allow me to bring a trailer in and refuel my 200l drum but they like to have a look at it to see it is OK. No problems really and I get them to seal it if I can for safety on the road.

 

I believe there is a maximum amount of fuel you can carry in jerry cans to comply with the law and I am always careful when I have fuel on board to keep out of the centre of town.

Shell at YBAF can supply avgas in 44's - can deliver as well. Best rob a bank before you order though.

I reckon the OH & S bureaucrats that drew up those regs that say you can't fill or carry jerry cans or 200ltr drums in public and you can't get 200ltr drums of fuel any more because the cost of meeting their regulations is so high, probably all live in up market town houses without mowers and other gear and for a hobby get as far as that little local and oh so expensive side walk bistro or what ever.

 

No sense and absolutely no idea of the reality of real life.

 

Fortunately our Council, the aerodrome owners, are very supportive of all things aviation.

 

Excellent fuelling facilities where, using a good deal of discretion, we can fill both of the above without questions.

 

Second sealed 1200 metre runway soon we hope if the funds come through plus plans for extra taxiways and a completely revamped and a changed layout and an increased in area hard standing and a new terminal some time in the distant future plus other expansion plans.

Must be a state reg re the drums, When I'm working my dozer (in QLD), I manage to get thru 300 odd litres a day. Fuel comes via 44's totaling 1,000 ltr on the back of my ute from the local servo - no problems yet.

 

Shell AF will put Avgas on a courier truck - not much help to you southerners though. HPD
