Anyone familiar with Moronbah Airport?

I'd like to land at Moronbah airport, but the ERSA says 3 days prior notice required.

 

I sent an email and they tell me that I require BARS accreditation to land.

 

Aircraft Operator | Flight Safety Foundation - BARS Program

 

From what I can work out from the FAQ page,

 

The BARS program requires a 35 day notification period and then an audit to be completed.

 

· It costs US $35,000 to be a lowest tier member

 

· And also requires a 2 day audit that costs US $19,000

But I'm told that plent of light aircraft go in and out of there regularly.

 

Have I just come across an rule nazi from BHP, who is trying to justify their existence, or are light aircraft just not allowed there?

 

Does anyone have experience using this airstrip?

No experience of the strip but most mining company airstrips have ridiculous landing requirements set by out of control OH&S departments. They don't want you there. Can't even go there if you are commercial, operating under an AOC without a huge number of extra hoops to jump through. A good example of why Australia is uncompetitive on the world stage.

Last time I was there it was pretty simple actually contact the Ops or ARO person get them to send you the documentation for requesting a slot fill it out send it back if I remember correctly it cost $11 or the landing fee. I was in a 182 though not sure with RA erg if that is what you are in. They couldn't have been more helpful.

I went there once in an ultralight a few years back - parked it for a couple of hours - did some stuff and left

 

There was no complexity or forms then - things have probably changed ? ........... but I'm sure I contacted Isaac Council and spoke to their airport rep

Last time I rang the number in Ersa I was told sorry but the perception is that RA certificate holders are not as well trained as GA and I could not land there

Late last year I flew to Toowoomba to pick up my son and delivered him back to Moranbah where he works in one of the mines. ( not BHP who ownes the airport) Being a GA pilot himself, he asked and was granted permission to land there. With 3days notice required and also an ETA , and the time was worked so it was,nt too close to big bird arrivals or departures. When he asked why all the hullabaloo , was informed that it is a busy airport, at least 3or 4 planes a day. Before leaving I thought it best to visit the WC so headed across the Tarmac , to be met by an airport official informing me I couldn't leave the plane without a high vis shirt on. He was good enough to escort me to the gate and back, but also said the boys were amused about my little transformer plane. Apparently Foxbat and transformers have the same symbol. It is indeed a shame that the mines have bought and closed ( to the public) many of the local airports, including Blackwater , Middlemount, Dysart and Moranbah that I know of.
