Pearo Posted July 11, 2016 Posted July 11, 2016 Best thing I have done in a long time, wish I took a video recorder. Did 2 ILS landings at LAX. First landing was assisted (controls) and second land unassisted. Managed to keep the aircraft intact! I also got to do a full stall and I was stunned at how docile the stall was. Its amazing how real the full motion sims are. Just before leaving, we did a full Cat 3B autoland, must take a few hours to learn to trust the aircraft because I was positively soiling myself.
Birdseye Posted July 11, 2016 Posted July 11, 2016 Vaguely remember doing one in a Trident simulator at Heathrow many years ago, trust is required. Incidentally the minum RVR requirement at the time was (AFAIR) 75 metres and the resson for that was so the aircraft could taxi off the runway. As an ATC, I was also trained to use the airfield movement radar (ASMI) to direct emergency services to an incident in low vis conditions. All this long before we had home computers and MS Windows.
kaz3g Posted July 12, 2016 Posted July 12, 2016 I did a stint in a three-dimension movement SAAB 340 simulator a while back. Instructor decided I was handling the takeoff from Canberra too easily so he threw in a thunderstorm at about 500'! Pretty amazing experience. Kaz
GraemeK Posted July 12, 2016 Posted July 12, 2016 Was lucky enough to have 2 hours in the full motion Qantas 737 simulator at Essendon a while back (part of their free Frequent Flyer goodies). Spent most of the time doing touch and goes at Hong Kong (Chek Lap Kok unfortunately, not Kai Tak!) with some steep turns (Bank Angle!! Bank Angle!!), engine failures, stalls, etc thrown in for good measure. Finished up with a couple of approaches into Queenstown NZ. Great fun, and incredibly realistic. Hardest part was taxiing, tending to overcontrol.
