planedriver Posted September 22, 2017 Posted September 22, 2017 How many real friends do you need? If you have more than 2 good ones you are lucky.. Nev Once again, Nev got it right.
red750 Posted September 22, 2017 Posted September 22, 2017 Many people's FB friends are 'virtual' friends, or friends of friends. Many have never met face to face or spoken. I have only met one of my Rec Flying acquaintances face to face, and that was once only. Yet I feel I have more RF 'friends' than FB friends. I know ALL of my FB friends personally. Some are former workmates, some of whom live interstate, others are relatives.
onetrack Posted September 23, 2017 Posted September 23, 2017 I don't use Farcebook and rarely look at it. I find it exceptionally user-unfriendly in its layout, it is basically full of useless comments from vain, low-intelligence people, who feel the need to see their puerile and often nasty comments, on a public website. The problem with Farcebook is it is poorly moderated. All online online discussions need to be well-moderated to eliminate the nastiness, the ugliness and the outright stalking that goes on, on websites where unfettered public access is allowed. The second problem with Farcebook is it's owned and run by a devious individual who ensures Farcebook indulges in devious tracking and following of anyone who posts to the site - as you find out, when you utilise programs such as Ghostery. I've come across many websites where, when you click on them, you get a split-second redirect to a Farcebook tracking page, then a redirect to the actual website you think you were going straight to. As one bloke commented, these sleazy, devious, often-hidden redirects are like spotting a rat running under your bed. You don't want that rat there, you don't know what it's doing, or going to do, there - and you just know instinctively, it's not something you want under your bed. Zuckerberg is a billionaire because he's found you can manipulate peoples vanities and the need to discuss things with others - and then Zuckerberg is effectively using those people and their posts as unpaid workers for him, and he can sell this "information" database to businesses that seek to find and engage with potential customers. It's really the ultimate in corporate cunning and deviousness. Google isn't much different. Google want you to post reviews and take photos of places you've visited and engaged with. Google will even take control of your phones camera to make this easier for you. WTF?? I don't want some faceless corporation controlling my phones camera!! Sorry, Google, that's one permission I'm not giving, I've probably given you too much by way of permissions already! So - Google is now using you, me, and every other willing "reviewer" as an unpaid employee. We post reviews, and Google make huge money out of that free information. Google is now the richest corporation on the planet, worth in excess of $60B - largely done on the back of unpaid contributors to their databases. So, now Google has realised the peasants need a reward. They've given us "Google points" for reviewing. Woo-Hoo! I've garnered 15,000 Google points! But hang on! - those Google points are good for SFA! I can't exchange them for money, I can't exchange them for anything useful - I just get a good fuzzy feeling when I see the number of Google points I've accumulated! Devious and cunning and faceless global corporations, driven by worship of the Almighty Dollar, are the biggest threat to our societies, to our cultures, and to our interactions with each other. There is no-one in these corporations you can pick out and talk to by name. They specialise in remote contact, by email only, and only on their terms - because they hold all the aces. Try contacting someone with authority within eBay, within Amazon, within Google, to try to sort out a complaint or problem. It's just not possible, they will deal with you on their (harsh, non-negotiable) terms, and within their time frame. Personally, I greatly prefer forums run by individual people I can talk to, drrectly. People I can identify by name and have a one-on-one discussion with. People I can discuss methods, and processes, and terms of dealing, when it comes to dealing with people. People who treat contributors as people, and who value the contributors input and loyalty to their site/s. There's no loyalty with global corporations, there's no appreciation of any individuals contributions, you are just a faceless worker drone to be milked constantly to feed the greed of the giant global corporation! Sorry if this comes across as a bit of a rant - but essentially, I utterly detest the global corporations approach and modus operandi - and nowhere else does it grate as much as watching Farcebook in action. 2 1
facthunter Posted September 26, 2017 Posted September 26, 2017 "Get a life" comes to mind. Addiction isn't confined to liquids and gambling only.. Having the ability to not go with the herd has rewards as YOU retain control of your life. Why give that power to some other person or structure? Nev
spacesailor Posted September 26, 2017 Posted September 26, 2017 FaceBook When compering FB to Telstra phone, WHO would pay the exorbitant rates ($80 once) without video, against $60 a month internet connection with video, face to face conversations. When parted from loved ones for Decades, FaceBook is priceless!. My wife's (Sydney), brother (Dublin), goes to his daughter's to SEE each other, something the old phone didn't couldn't compete with. and cheap . spacesailor 1
bexrbetter Posted September 26, 2017 Posted September 26, 2017 I use Facebook to keep in contact with Australian friends and family, I tried exploring it for a while but the empowered ignorance out there is insane. Apparently people think that every part of life can be explained buy a 15 word Meme. 1 1
Bernie Posted September 26, 2017 Posted September 26, 2017 I also use F/B but only with my family and close friends , I will be away from home from tomorrow for a bit I will not have phone reception with my server , but I will have internet so will still be contactable thru F/B . If the family need me . Bernie .
red750 Posted September 26, 2017 Posted September 26, 2017 Many of the Quickies jokes, silly signs and photos I post on WUA come from FB.
onetrack Posted September 26, 2017 Posted September 26, 2017 I don't see why you need to use Faecebook for video chats. Skype works just fine for us, and Skype is less devious with its user manipulation and data-gathering, as compared to Faecebook. There are many reasons why I intensely detest Faecebook, and here are just some; 1. FB caters to peoples vanity and actually massages FB users vanity. I feel no need to post that I've just been to the casino/show/corner store/stood outside the Channel 7 window, and waved to to the cameras on Sunrise. 2. FB is devious with its data collection and what it does with it. FB has multiple privacy and security and online tracking issues. It encourages stalkers and angry, abusive people, who revel in their ability to carry out their anti-social behaviour with anonymity. It's easy enough to start up a fictitious FB account. 3. FB caters to the selfie-stick breed, the vain, shallow extroverts, and encourages them with systems that massage those type of personalities. These peoples lives revolve around being social-holics, and they get endorphin kicks from an increase in FB "likes". 4. FB is devious with its system setup. There's no balance, it's all carefully set up to ensure it's addictive. There's "likes", but no "dislikes". There are subtle rewards for posting stuff that is totally inane, and which has no depth of thought attached. 5. Many FB users lives are centred on FB, to the detriment of genuine, face-to-face contact and regular relationships. These people will go out of their way to find out what their FB friends are doing right now - but they'd never spend an hour checking up on, or talking to older relatives, or even just talking to the older people living in their street. These older people have lived lives full of incredible events, deeds, and experiences, and have a depth of character that doesn't exist in FB adherents. 6. FB is as addictive as any casino or pokie - and its designed that way on purpose. It appeals to people who have little by way of proper social skills, and pretends to be a place where social skills are practised. The very opposite is true, and a substantial number of FB users have trouble in normal face-to-face social situations. 7. FB is a very big waster of time. I guess that's O.K. if you have nothing to do, or you achieve very little each day - but I'll wager the "movers and shakers" of this world spend very little time on FB. https://www.quora.com/What-are-some-reasons-why-people-dont-have-Facebook-or-any-other-social-media 1 2 1
johnm Posted September 26, 2017 Posted September 26, 2017 gave you a caution onetrack ! (good insight all the same) ............ hoping the FB people you describe get some sort of meaning out of breathing oxygen, somehow
storchy neil Posted September 27, 2017 Posted September 27, 2017 Oh sheeet bloody FB never had it gee so that's what's wrong Neil
Old Koreelah Posted September 27, 2017 Posted September 27, 2017 ...There are many reasons why I intensely detest Faecebook, and here are just some;.., Time to revisit an alternative: 1
Admin Posted September 27, 2017 Posted September 27, 2017 I wish I could not have anything to do with fb etc however as Recreational Flying links in to fb I unfortunately have to
facthunter Posted September 27, 2017 Posted September 27, 2017 I still haven't used it or twitter. You miss out on a lot of links, (same with paywalls)but my time is fully catered for already and I can't handle any more BS than I already have to. (but I'm working on cutting it back as a priority.). It's to make money, and designed to maximise it. Nev 1 1
red750 Posted September 27, 2017 Posted September 27, 2017 Twitter is worse - look at its most famous (infamous?) user. Almost started a war on Twitter.
Yenn Posted September 27, 2017 Posted September 27, 2017 I went on to facebook as I was told it would have info about a flying business. It did, but not much and it bombarded me with bulls whatever. It took me ages to rid myself of its influence. I kept getting emails that X wanted to be my friend. In the end my wife managed to find a way to stop them coming in. It is amazing how much info they have about you, they pop up with people you only vaguely knew years ago.
Admin Posted September 27, 2017 Posted September 27, 2017 Mine keeps coming up asking if I want to be friends with Runciman...remember him...not 1
red750 Posted September 27, 2017 Posted September 27, 2017 After all the discussion about facebook, this video just popped up: https://www.facebook.com/video.php?v=1770813236549836
spacesailor Posted September 27, 2017 Posted September 27, 2017 Does Twitter & Skype work without phone handset's and is completely free of charge ?. Never Skyped nor twittered & very really use FB, but SRFC is there, (live weather at field) as well as Hummel Aviation, HARS.and a lot more I don't follow. So it comes in handy even if you don't follow anything. spacesailor 1
bexrbetter Posted September 27, 2017 Posted September 27, 2017 Does Skype work without phone handset's and is completely free of charge ?. Yup, been using Skype for years, completely free, write message, speech or video call if you want. One guy even hooked me into his computer direct and we discussed changes in his 3D model as he did the changes live, I don't know how to do that though. Then I got Viber for all my calls, but now WhatsApp is the bee knees (on my phone), again all free and message, speech message or video call. I use Skype if I have larger files to send. 1
bull Posted November 10, 2017 Posted November 10, 2017 I know which I prefer. This site is far superior to Social Media. i made the mistake of joining Facebook, mainly to get info about one flying business. Since then I just get bombarded with rubbish emails about what someone has posted or someone wants to be friends. Joining them was nearly as bad a mistake as bringing Leucaenia on to my property. On the facebook site you go to settings and you can select the no emails option, that will fix your problem
spacesailor Posted November 10, 2017 Posted November 10, 2017 ALL my mobile calls are $1 per 30seconds, bit expensive but hardly used $ 5 per month when I was on $10 p month contract.(12X10=$120 p year) This Telstra long-life prepaid is $ 70 p year,(70/12= $5.8p month)excess rolls over on the next $70payment, the wife's on Aldi prepaid. spacesailor

Jaba-who Posted November 12, 2017 Posted November 12, 2017 I went on to facebook as I was told it would have info about a flying business. It's scary how Facebook ( and by extension - anyone they share your info with) follows what you do and across devices and platforms. ) I had a number of times where I have looked up a business website or on maps on my phone and called them. Not even spoken to the owner just a receptionist. Then suddenly I am being asked to friend the principle of the business. Never had any contact with the person before and never been asked to friend them before. And never directly on Facebook and they have no mutual friends etc. Facebook has spied on my phone calls and linked me to people I have had a phone business contact with. Scary. 1
