Kyle Communications Posted May 24, 2017 Posted May 24, 2017 I have a reasonable size CNC milling machine so I can machine a mold :) Depends if you want to make a cover or just do a solid fill of the clear. I havent thought of how to do the cover yet until I see how my units come out in size and shape
MajorTom Posted May 26, 2017 Author Posted May 26, 2017 Well, I marked the position, where I would position the brackets for the wing support. I have just one wingtank, so rib 3 is on the outside of the tank. The middle of the small pieces go to 3. hole. Right?
Kyle Communications Posted May 26, 2017 Posted May 26, 2017 I would have to check but I am pretty sure I didnt have to drill any holes..but mine was a XL. Thw wing and struts are exactly the same. I will look in the manual tomorrow. I also have a S build manual here as well
MajorTom Posted May 31, 2017 Author Posted May 31, 2017 Yesterday I had my first flight in a Savannah. It was was a 7 hours drive to get there, but worth the trip. Next sunday I will have my theoretical exam for my pilots licence. So no building this week, but learning. Anyway, last weekend, after prepping all parts, I started the rear fuselage. This went quick and was so much fun. Even the manual is great!!! 1

Depends if you want to make a cover or just do a solid fill of the clear. I havent thought of how to do the cover yet until I see how my units come out in size and shape I would like to try a solid fill. I don't have CNC equipment. But an old manual machine. I hope maybe I can use some everyday stuff to make a mould. Guess it has to be very polished to get a clear result. Any hints are wellcome.
Kyle Communications Posted May 31, 2017 Posted May 31, 2017 My Digisparks arrived today..waiting on the Leds...Fets arrived last week. I have a small canopy from the model plane days that could make a good male mold. I could always draw one up in Fusion 360 and machine one but I think the canopy is the easiest way. Just grab a couple the right size and fit the completed electronics into it then just fill it with the clear resin
MajorTom Posted June 12, 2017 Author Posted June 12, 2017 Way ahead of schedule I just finished my rear fuselage. It was a great joy to built. Even the manual was good to read and understand. So much earlier than expected I have to think about the next steps and the next things to procur. - Avionics : a bundle of AVmap Ultra Efis and Engibox would be nice and space saving. A small 4,3" MGL double would be nice too, but its 2.500 Euro compared to 1.500 Euro for Avmap - carpet or no carpet, is an other question - seats (non adjustable), buy them from ICP or make them 1
Kyle Communications Posted June 12, 2017 Posted June 12, 2017 Looking good Tom The MGL Xtreme x 2 is what I have and I am super happy with them. If your struggling for the money or just want to DIY try Oleg Home - Experimental Avionics looks pretty reasonable and very cheap Got my strobes working on the weekend..those digisparks are top little boards. Used 2 x 10W leds but waiting on 20W ones to arrive and will try them. The 10 watt ones are pretty good but want to see how much extra lumens output of the 20W...I will put them side by side to see how they go
Skee Posted June 12, 2017 Posted June 12, 2017 I'm the beginning all goes fast because the big parts are easy to make. 1
MajorTom Posted June 12, 2017 Author Posted June 12, 2017 A part that gave me a hard time, was the first frame of the rear fuselage. I rivited and drilled out for 3 times!!! Alway tried to get the angle right and failed. Finaly I clecoed the part together and used a peace of wood to fix the angle, while the frame was in the plane.
MajorTom Posted June 12, 2017 Author Posted June 12, 2017 I'm the beginning all goes fast because the big parts are easy to make. Yes, I can already picture myself, spending hours after hours brooding fruitless over the engine installation...
Kyle Communications Posted June 12, 2017 Posted June 12, 2017 The last 10% of the build seems to take 90% of the total time to build the aircraft:) well it seems that way

If your struggling for the money or just want to DIY try Oleg Home - Experimental Avionics looks pretty reasonable and very cheap No, I don't want to built the Efis and EMS myself, al least not this time. I would rather get into the air... MGL looks good too. I have no chance to compare. The AVmap stuff is a little smaller but fully intergrated vs. MGL is seperate. You need the two displays and an engine sensor module and an avionics module, right?
MajorTom Posted June 12, 2017 Author Posted June 12, 2017 The last 10% of the build seems to take 90% of the total time to build the aircraft:) well it seems that way So I heard... 90% finished - 90% to go.... Just hope this is not true.... Don't like to think for hours just if the hose goes ober this peace or under or around ... and no progress to see
Kyle Communications Posted June 12, 2017 Posted June 12, 2017 No the Xtreme has it all in the one unit. You get the RDAC which hooks to the engine sensors and you can scroll through each page or you can split the screen so it has it all on the screen at once
MajorTom Posted June 12, 2017 Author Posted June 12, 2017 O.K. but you need a rdac for the engine and an iBox for the avionic sensors. Right?
Kyle Communications Posted June 12, 2017 Posted June 12, 2017 I have 2 of the Xtreme EFIS but you can also by a EMS only that looks exactly the same but it isnt a lot cheaper thats why I got the 2 EFIS and just use the 1 RDAC and I run one EFIS on the AHRS page and the other EFIS on the EMS page..I dont use the all in one page it gets a bit cluttered.. I also have the AHRS and Compass module to make it more accurate but it has it inbuilt just like the Avmap one you dont need to get them if you just want to keep the cost down
Kyle Communications Posted June 12, 2017 Posted June 12, 2017 A pic of when I was building the new dash and one while flying
Kyle Communications Posted June 12, 2017 Posted June 12, 2017 No you just need the RDAC no I-box at all
MajorTom Posted June 12, 2017 Author Posted June 12, 2017 Well o.k. then. I must admit the info on the MGL homepage is a little confusing for me. Can you connect pitot and static directly to the Xtreme EFIS?
Kyle Communications Posted June 12, 2017 Posted June 12, 2017 I installed my RDAC on the pax side inside the cabin. I dont have a picture of it I dont think but will see what I can find. All the sensors just go to the RDAC its really simple
Kyle Communications Posted June 12, 2017 Posted June 12, 2017 yes pitot and static connect directly to the back of the unit
MajorTom Posted June 12, 2017 Author Posted June 12, 2017 yes pitot and static connect directly to the back of the unit Now I am confused. One display and RDAC are for engine monitoring. So far I understand. The 2. display is for EFIS, o.k. but I don't understand if and why I need this AHRS module.
