Finally got to a stage in my life where I may actually get a chance to learn to fly.

I have joined this forum to help me get a clearer understanding of all that is involved in getting there. Also to enjoy the comradery that forums like this one offers.

The forum has been quite enlightening so far.

Thanks

Simon

Hi Simon & 098_welcome.gif.81ff07d492568199326e4f64f78d7bc6.gif,

Good decision! Where will you be doing your learning?

Cheers,

Neil

Somewhere in Central Victoria (I am in Bendigo)? Still have not decided and won't be looking at starting anything until the end of the year.

Hi and welcome Simon. It is an awesome thing to do.

Why wait to the end of the year? You can do your training a little at a time as the budget allows. Lessons generally cost between $200 and $250 per lesson. You can book a TIF (Trial Introductory Flight) to see if it is for you.

Cheers, Tony

Welcome Simon.

As Nightmare has already said, if you are not sure of your intentions, just book yourself a trial instruction flight. It normally only goes for about half an hour or so and won't break the bank, and will either tell you that it's not for you, or most likely why the hell didn't I do this before.080_plane.gif.36548049f8f1bc4c332462aa4f981ffb.gif

Then once decided, you can plan ahead at your own pace.

A Birthday gift of a T.I.F. is a great idea, tell the family.004_oh_yeah.gif.82b3078adb230b2d9519fd79c5873d7f.gif012_thumb_up.gif.cb3bc51429685855e5e23c55d661406e.gif

That's how I got into flying, I was umming and ahhing about whether I wanted to do this for a good year or more... My long suffering wife, just got online and got a voucher for me for my birthday. I then said to myself, "Holy cr#p! this is real!" I didn't go for another 2 months. When I turned up, it rained, so had to reschedule. I finally got into the air about a week later.... and how awesome it was! I sometimes think that she regrets getting me that voucher, it's all I talk about....109_groan.gif.66f71fc85b2fabe1695703d67c904c24.gifinsane.gif.b56be3c4390e84bce5e5e6bf4f69a458.gifI think the most difficult step with learning to fly is the first one.

My Misses organized a TIF for me, but a few months later she wanted a divorce. That's when I started drinking.

I still drink most nights, but I'm not sure whether it's in gratitude for the TIF, or the total relief from always being wrong.067_bash.gif.26fb8516c20ce4d7842b820ac15914cf.gif

We get on quite well these days, so i'm sure it's got to be the former.080_plane.gif.36548049f8f1bc4c332462aa4f981ffb.gif012_thumb_up.gif.cb3bc51429685855e5e23c55d661406e.gif

Thanks for your friendly welcome everyone.

I will investigate a TIF shortly. There's a couple being offered locally. I will let you know how it goes.

Also note that your TIF time counts towards your hours

I started to learn last year after one of my sons started. I did a trial lesson as I was worried I would get airsick, thankfully all went well and I still cant wipe the smile off my face!! I dont know the system where you are but you need to decide what class of licence you want, I chose ULM (ultra light ) as it is the best compromise of cost per hour and doesn't require super human fitness either.

Good luck and let us know how you get on.

The equivalent here would be the Recreational Pilot Certificate (RPC) through Recreational Aviation Australia (RAAus) limiting you to fly single engine aircraft with MTOW up to 600kg or 650kg with floats, 1 or 2 seats and stall speed of 45kts or less.
