Cosmick Posted March 5, 2017 Posted March 5, 2017 Lucky escape for pilot after plane crashes west of Canberra 19-8556
storchy neil Posted March 5, 2017 Posted March 5, 2017 bit bent luck was on his side good to see help was there neil 1
rankamateur Posted March 5, 2017 Posted March 5, 2017 Interesting shaped rudder design. Pleased the locals put the fire out so they didn't need to move the pilot before he was assessed.
kgwilson Posted March 5, 2017 Posted March 5, 2017 Looks like he will be OK but back injuries can last for the rest of your life. I can't understand why so many people take take videos in portrait mode on their phone. You can never get the whole scene in unless it is in the distance. 1
nomadpete Posted March 5, 2017 Posted March 5, 2017 So where can I get one of these 'self made' planes? I'm getting sick of 'owner building' mine! 1 3 2
M61A1 Posted March 5, 2017 Posted March 5, 2017 So where can I get one of these 'self made' planes? I'm getting sick of 'owner building' mine! I cringe every time I see a headline like that....Do these people realise every commercial aircraft ever built, was built with the lowest bidder manufactured parts and the lowest skilled labour they could manage with? Every 737 is put together by Billy Bob from parts made by Juan and Zhang. 2 1 2
Kyle Communications Posted March 5, 2017 Posted March 5, 2017 It has a volksplane style of tailfeathers. Car engine with redrive not a suby..maybe corvair? 1
corvairkr Posted March 5, 2017 Posted March 5, 2017 It looks like a copy of a Pilatus Porter with some type of inline 4 1 2
ClintonB Posted March 5, 2017 Posted March 5, 2017 Looks like the ragwing storch by the paint job, watched it on you tube a few times 1 1
DrZoos Posted March 5, 2017 Posted March 5, 2017 Poor guys laying there being filmed...not good. Probably great for RAA and police, but not good for the poor pilot and family... 4
Jabiru7252 Posted March 5, 2017 Posted March 5, 2017 Yes, I think it was an intrusion and downright rude to poke a camera at the guy. And turn your &*^% camera so we see the video as it should be seen, wide screen!!!! Her'es hoping he and his plane are up and flying soon as possible. 2 1
SDQDI Posted March 5, 2017 Posted March 5, 2017 Reminded me a little of the cartoon pic of a few people watching someone drown while all recording it on their smartphones. 4
planedriver Posted March 5, 2017 Posted March 5, 2017 Not a good day for the poor fellah, hope and pray that his injuries are not too serious and he makes a speedy recovery. Had a little look on line, but was wondering what motors they put in those aircraft. They obviously have a good short-field performance and very low stall speed providing the fan keeps turning.
bexrbetter Posted March 5, 2017 Posted March 5, 2017 It sounds like the video'er actually did some stuff like help get the fire out etc before shooting? 2
coinz Posted March 5, 2017 Posted March 5, 2017 This thing about the video being shot in portrait may not be his fault,i had some video's of my Supapup but after my laptop came back from a repairer they are all in Portrait too,and i haven't been able to change them back. cheers colin 1
pmccarthy Posted March 5, 2017 Posted March 5, 2017 News this morning says he had put in a new engine that was too heavy, so shut it down. I don't know what that means!
pmccarthy Posted March 5, 2017 Posted March 5, 2017 Canberra Times: Cootamundra LAC acting inspector Michael Madgwick said the man was testing home-made modifications to the plane, and the engine was too heavy for the aircraft. "It prevented him from getting a lot of lift. It caused the problem, and he shut it down," he said. The pilot was a member of the Tumut Aero Club and regularly visited the airport at Bombowlee, Acting Inspector Madgwick said.
turboplanner Posted March 5, 2017 Posted March 5, 2017 It looks like anyone who communicates details of a crash is up for criticism. The journalist correctly described the 19 registered aircraft as self built; the self made comment came from here; both are correct, but some people seem uneasy at that coming out in the open.
geoffreywh Posted March 5, 2017 Posted March 5, 2017 This is all wrong on so many levels I hardly know where to start, In fact, the bloke (wounded or not) should be thoroughly looked at by the RAA. ...............Quote "It prevented him from getting a lot of lift. It caused the problem, and he shut it down," Is a quote that shows the speaker has NO CLUE what he is talking about.... 1
Deskpilot Posted March 5, 2017 Posted March 5, 2017 If you watch the earlier videos, especially the first flight one, you'll see it appears there is a problem with yaw control. We don't know what engine he had in it then.
fly_tornado Posted March 6, 2017 Posted March 6, 2017 the first engine looks like its a VW with a RE drive kit
planesmaker Posted March 6, 2017 Posted March 6, 2017 Don't believe what you read in the press! Or people who know nothing about flying. 1
