It's often quoted as a no no. The best engine out performance is when the good engine is a bit wing low. This makes directional control better and reduces the drag caused by the fuselage slipping through the airflow increasing form drag.( Parasite drag). IF you are struggling to get VMC (a) having the dead engine lower will ruin your day as you will not have enough rudder effect for full directional control and IF you are well over VMC(a) you will not do an optimum ROC (Rate of climb). In cruise or descending or maneuvering, when you have a good margin of airspeed over both VMC(a) and Vs for configuration you are in, turning towards the dead engine is possible safely, provided you realise what you are doing and fly more precisely, and carefully. ASSYMETRICAL power is only critical when you have full power and get slow and need to maintain or gain ALTITUDE. If you close the other (good engine ) throttle, your plane becomes balanced once again, and even if you are below VMC (a) the plane becomes controllable by the rudder once again. Stall speeds still apply for maneuvering (Bank angle) and your flap configuration/ A/C weight.. Nev

All major turns were to the left (into the good engine) with a 20nm final onto 16R

Can anyone of you bring up the radar track for this aircraft? According to the news report, the loss occurred 16 kms from ASSY which is about 8.5 NM. I reckon the prop is in the Holdsworthy Army Firing Range......

OME

It could have set off unexploded ordnance there 037_yikes.gif.f44636559f7f2c4c52637b7ff2322907.gif.

The thing that stands out is that they put him on a right hand circuit for rwy 16, and that had 2 x 90 degree turns where the aircrafthad to turn into the dead engine.

I thought that was a no no.

Only if you have an engine failure after takeoff, or are slow with high power set on the operating engine. On descent or clean at high speed, not a problem.

Normal circuit for 16R in Sydney is a right-hand circuit due to the parallel runway operations. If as shown above he did a left circuit for 16R, then it would only be because he specifically asked for it.
