Kyle Communications Posted July 20, 2017 Posted July 20, 2017 I will start doing the rear frames this weekend. We are also going to strap the rear frames..the corner pieces are really weak. I will put it on the blog when I get to it It wont add any weight maybe 100 grams if that but will really strengthen the whole framing up 1
merc Posted July 20, 2017 Posted July 20, 2017 Mark , when you say premade, do you use it straight out of the bottle? I am paying $180+ for 1US gal of Alodine but then dilute it 3 to 1 with distilled water, giving me about 15lts. of mixWhat is the brand name of the mag wheel cleaner? is it the same as Alumiprep 33? Correction, the rate to dilute Alodine ( for dipping ) is 2 to 1. I use 3 to 1 for the Alumiprep 33 1
Kyle Communications Posted July 20, 2017 Posted July 20, 2017 Tony is your Alodine the same stuff as I have?
merc Posted July 20, 2017 Posted July 20, 2017 Tony is your Alodine the same stuff as I have? Yes looks the same
rankamateur Posted July 20, 2017 Posted July 20, 2017 actually thats a good idea Steve..my rims get corrosion on them Everyone does. Just quicker on the beach. How would it go on the engine castings?, they always get dull quickly at the beach too.
rankamateur Posted July 21, 2017 Posted July 21, 2017 ? Two things Hank. All your deburring has to be done before putting on the Alodine. And to do large sheets Tom Cadet uses a frame knocked up out of 4x2 framing timber and lays a sheet of plastic in the frame on top of a bench to form a large shallow pond. Take care not to pierce the sheet with the corners of your sheets (2 people). 1
FIL65 Posted July 21, 2017 Author Posted July 21, 2017 I think I will set up a rinse bath as well and recycle the rinse water until it gets to contaminated. I'm on tank water so it is a limited supply and I can also control the contamination. 1
Kyle Communications Posted July 21, 2017 Posted July 21, 2017 I will make up a long skinny frame and line it to do the longerons and the rear trailing edges of the wing. Was going to do the spar but not real keen on the acid there as I couldnt garantee washing it completely out so will Jiff it and etch prime it 1

FIL65 Posted July 26, 2017 Author Posted July 26, 2017 Hi Guys, Anyone attending the Fly-In at Gympie on the 5th and 6th of August?
Kyle Communications Posted July 26, 2017 Posted July 26, 2017 I will be up at my farm for the weekend...driving with a trailer so not flying up there
FIL65 Posted February 4, 2018 Author Posted February 4, 2018 Well the house is 90% finished and we have moved out of the shed which has meant that I have been able to start setting up the workshop so I can start the Savannah build. Slowly unpacking all my tools and stuff. Setup my office and mancave which I have called the AV8R Bar. 4
FIL65 Posted February 4, 2018 Author Posted February 4, 2018 I have decided to Alodine all my parts, so I sorting out some tubs for the process. I have all the parts up to 1200mm long sorted but am just working out how to do the sheets as they wont fit in the tubs I have bought. I have also decided to do a test fit of all the components for each assembly. I have started with the tail feathers. This enables me to ensure I have all the parts, and also allow me to get the assembly process in my head before I start the true assembly after the de-burring, Aldine and etch primer has been completed. I have found out already if you get one piece wrong you wont have everything line up correctly. I might also try to take plenty of photos to make a log for future builders. 2

FIL65 Posted February 4, 2018 Author Posted February 4, 2018 Thanks Hank, when do you start your build? Would be good to have someone building the same time.
eightyknots Posted February 6, 2018 Posted February 6, 2018 Thanks Hank, when do you start your build? Would be good to have someone building the same time. I have finished my shed, received Council's Code of Compliance Certificate last month and have been setting up benches tools, etc. Lately, I have been sorting parts into groups and I would like to start putting the fin together in a week or so. I will try to do a bit here and there, whenever I get time after work.
Kyle Communications Posted February 6, 2018 Posted February 6, 2018 You better get ready Hank...I will be there early next week. I expect to see some of your handywork :) 1
FIL65 Posted February 18, 2018 Author Posted February 18, 2018 Had my first go at Alodine dipping today. Set up baths and rinse tanks. After de-burring I had a go at the rear fuselage frames. Pretty happy with the results, maybe a bit longer in the alodine. Had to rivet one frame together to feel like I had achieved something for all the effort. 1
Kyle Communications Posted February 18, 2018 Posted February 18, 2018 You did dilute the alodine for dipping? 1part alodine and 1part water
Kyle Communications Posted February 18, 2018 Posted February 18, 2018 did you use the supercheap acid?
FIL65 Posted February 18, 2018 Author Posted February 18, 2018 Yeh Mark, I used the Supercheap Ali-Brite. I went with 1 part alodine to 2parts water as per the Henkel product sheet.
Kyle Communications Posted February 18, 2018 Posted February 18, 2018 oops yes you are correct on the mix...I had a brain fart...mine I mixed so long ago...and it is still working fine as well just starting to get a little weaker now..just leave in for a bit longer anyway

Did you have a reason for riveting through the corner frames into the thin material of the wall frame? I would suggest putting the rivets through in the opposite direction, pulling against the holes in the heavier material always.
