Stearman Posted April 11, 2017 Posted April 11, 2017 Just wondering what people are using ( if anything ) to protect composite props from stone chips & general wear? I came across this on the Aircraft Spruce website - 3M ALUMINUM PROP TAPE - 2 WIDTH from Aircraft Spruce Has anyone used this? Is it any more durable than the polyurethane tapes like the one linked below which I have been using, it works OK but I would like something even more durable - 3M POLYURETHANE 8561 / 8562 PROP TAPE from Aircraft Spruce
Downunder Posted April 11, 2017 Posted April 11, 2017 I have the Warp Drive tape, which I'm happy with. Stoneguard leading edge tape - Warp Drive Propellers It came with a small roller to smooth it out and remove air bubbles. Just had one come off a blade after 5 yrs, so it has lasted OK.

Bruce Tuncks Posted May 26, 2017 Posted May 26, 2017 I tried some aluminium tape once, but I think it may have been thinner than the 3M stuff. To my surprise, the aluminium tape was very easily punctured on the leading edge. Years ago, I used polyurethane tape from Bolly. When Bolly stopped selling prop tape, they told me to make my own from the anti-chip plastic sheet they sell at 4WD shops. This was the same stuff as the Bolly tape and I used it until a few years ago. It is very thick ( about 1mm) and I worried about how it would detract from the performance. So I'm interested too. I want a tape which is strong and thin and easy to remove and hopefully cheap too.
facthunter Posted May 26, 2017 Posted May 26, 2017 Thick tape not carefully let in to the surface would degrade the props performance, I would think. Also If it detaches you get more out of balance. Nev

I use it a lot at work, it's great for masking off areas under repair where you are stripping paint and doing metal conversion treatments, it's .003" thick and not very puncture resistant. The urethane tapes are best for durability. 1
