dominicm Posted April 25, 2017 Posted April 25, 2017 Luke, owner and pilot, seemed to be in particularly aggressive mood at the weekend. He was flying skin out of his Lightning to the delight of all watching. Basically it's how it should be flown anyway. Just to add that...liking how the higher resolution picks up the heat haze created out of the back of the engine, especially on the slo mo on landing at the end of the vid. 2

I recall standing at the Coltishall control tower to watch a passing out display by a Lightning course at 226 OCU in the early 70s. Didn't last very long, but for sound and vibration it was certainly impressive.
Deskpilot Posted April 26, 2017 Posted April 26, 2017 A brilliant model and well flown but, who saw the HUGE mistake. It's flying with the red rubber nose cone protectors on. Fire-streak missiles have a glass nose cone through which it 'see' it's target when 'locked on' done by the AI23b radar in the green 'bullet'. When it approaches it's target, it flies to one side and the circular windows trigger the missile to exploded hoping to kill the pilot as well as destroy the plane.
Birdseye Posted April 26, 2017 Posted April 26, 2017 Dummy (Inert) Red Top missiles carried by Lightnings did often have a red head on them.
Deskpilot Posted April 26, 2017 Posted April 26, 2017 But they're not Red Tops are they. Square fins is the easy way to distinguish. As I understand it, The main difference was that the Red Top exploded into some sort of rotating chain and again, tried to kill the pilot rather than the plane.
cooperplace Posted April 27, 2017 Posted April 27, 2017 where is the airstrip, with the L1011s (hopefully I'm correct) in the background? Marshalls?
dominicm Posted April 27, 2017 Author Posted April 27, 2017 Here we go. Fun police have arrived. Yes. Plenty of marshalls. This was at Bruntingthorpe testing ground at one end of a runway. A Jet Modellers Association event and well organised in terms of safety.
