Guest disperse Posted December 5, 2007 Posted December 5, 2007 Note to self: 'Cancel credit cards prior to death! Be sure and cancel your credit cards before you die! This is so priceless and so easy to see happening - customer service, being what it is today! A lady died this past January, and ANZ bank billed her for February and March for their annual service charges on her credit card, and Then added late fees and interest on the monthly charge. The balance had been $0.00, now is somewhere around $60.00. A family member placed a call to the ANZ Bank: Family Member: 'I am calling to tell you that she died in January.' ANZ: 'The account was never closed and the late fees and charges still apply.' Family Member: 'Maybe, you should turn it over to collections.' ANZ: 'Since it is two months past due, it already has been.' Family Member: So, what will they do when they find out she is dead?' ANZ: 'Either report her account to the frauds division or report her to the credit bureau, maybe both!' Family Member: 'Do you think God will be mad at her?' ANZ: 'Excuse me?' Family Member: 'Did you just get what I was telling you . . . The part about her being dead?' ANZ: 'Sir, you'll have to speak to my supervisor.' Supervisor gets on the phone: Family Member: 'I'm calling to tell you, she died in January.' ANZ: 'The account was never closed and the late fees and charges still apply.' Family Member: 'You mean you want to collect from her estate?' ANZ: (Stammer) 'Are you her lawyer?' Family Member: 'No, I'm her great nephew.' (Lawyer info given) ANZ: 'Could you fax us a certificate of death?' Family Member: 'Sure.' ( fax number is given ) After they get the fax: ANZ: 'Our system just isn't set up for death. I don't know what more I can do to help.' Family Member: 'Well, if you figure it out, great! If not, you could just keep billing her. I don't think she will care.' ANZ: 'Well, the late fees and charges do still apply.' Family Member: 'Would you like her new billing address?' ANZ: 'That might help.' Family Member: ' Rookwood Memorial Cemetery, 1249 Centenary Rd, Sydney Plot Number 1049.' ANZ: 'Sir, that's a cemetery!' Family Member: 'Well, what the **** do you do with dead people on your planet?' I certainly relate to this as 3 days after closing an account (cash withdrawl over the counter) I get a statment saying there is $2.30 owing 20days later $52.30 it is now at $102.30 and I'm expecting the next one soon .........
Bigglesworth Posted December 5, 2007 Posted December 5, 2007 I made an online purchase from an electronics store, paid by credit card, and a month later get an account for one dollar, still haven't paid it, wait to see what happens.
Guest ozzie Posted December 5, 2007 Posted December 5, 2007 I recieved a bill from Optus about ten years ago after i closed an account for 2 cents. it kept up for almost a year. one day i found a 2 cent coin so i sent it to them. sooner or later i would have had some debt collector screwing up my credit rating. Ozzie
Aerochute Kev Posted December 6, 2007 Posted December 6, 2007 Once had a bank CREDIT my account for about $600. Being the honest type that i am, rang the bank and suggested they may have made a mistake and put someone elses money in my account. "We'll fix it" they say but the ammount still shows up netx statement. Another phonecall with the same same "We'll fix it" attitude. Still shows up next month. This happened again the next month. We finally decide to spend the money and see if they pick it up as the money goes out of the account. They didnt. That was about 6-7 years ago and they have never done anything. Feel sorry for the people who banked the money and it disappeared. Kev
Geoff Posted December 6, 2007 Posted December 6, 2007 Now I know were it went:angry: may I have it back please:crying:
Yenn Posted December 7, 2007 Posted December 7, 2007 I think some businesses make a lot of money from demanding payments. BOC have twice billed me for hire of cylinders when they have been taken back. First time I told them several times of their mistake and it took ages to sort out. Second time I waited until they advised they were getting in the debt collectors, then they woke up. Telstra are similar.
Bigglesworth Posted December 7, 2007 Posted December 7, 2007 Mechanic friend of mine was billed $500 instead of $50 by mistake for a part he ordered. Didn't need the part sent it back asking to be credited for $500. Didn't get it.
Mazda Posted December 19, 2007 Posted December 19, 2007 When my Mum died I had similar problems. The problem is that it takes a month or more to get an official death certificate. I actually took to taking her ashes with me to places like the local Council, so when they asked for proof of death I'd pop her up on the counter. That usually worked. Counter staff don't like having human remains on their counter. (I was also very distressed and probably irrational at the time).

Hmmm, I wonder if I could get out of paying my bills by taking the ashes of my dear departed Jack Russel along, popping them on the counter, and telling them I was dead?
