Hello,

I will start my training soon and I'm wondering whether I'll need to apply for the RAAus membership as early as possible so that I can have the documents before I start or I can wait until I've used up the 3-hour allowance (as I haven't met and talked to my instructor yet and know little about how this thing works).

How long does it take to receive my student pilot certificate after applying online? I've never flown in Australia but I've logged >20 GA hours in Canada so I believe the solo will come very soon, hope it won't be delayed by the documents :'-(

Thanks!

I think you will find it is always best to get in early and get your paperwork done asap.

RA Aus won't issue a Pilot Certificate until you have completed your training and passed the test.

You will however get your membership number quite quickly.

As for flying in Australia, even though we are "Down Under" it is much the same as flying in Canada - push stick forward - trees get big; pull stick back - trees get small - keep stick back - trees get big again (lol)

But on a serious note - just listen to your instructor - they will give you all the training you need with regards to airspace and procedures. Once you have done the appropriate x-country and CTA training there is (almost) nowhere you can't go in Oz.

Have fun with your training (what location are you flying at?)

Cheers.

Thanks a lot, so I'll only need the membership number right? Looks like it's pretty straightforward in Australia (cuz in Canada I had to get more than three certificates before going solo: student pilot certificate, medical, radio licence... and they all took weeks to arrive!!!!) What a relief!

btw I'll be flying in Sydney :D

It might depend what airport in Sydney you are training at? If it's one of the controlled airports (bankstown, Camden) you might want to touch base with the instructor early as I believe you'll need a medical and ASIC before training (or solo)? The RA-AUS part is the easy part.

The instructor will be the best person to answer based on their requirements.
