pressurizing the intake pipes

Apparently a metabolic product of methyl alcohol is really nasty. But I'm sure that good grog has so little that we don't notice it. I love german beer too.

 

One of my unfulfilled ambitions is to visit a bierfest in Munich und wear lederhosen und trinken bier.

Burning alcohol is hard to see. It has an almost colour less flame. There's plenty of ignition sources around too with a running engine like the alternator brushes for instance. Ether evaporates so fast it would be hard to know exactly where it's going and it will freeze or rapid cool parts . It's also an anaesthetic and can put you to sleep quickly. wise LAME's shudder at the thought of people working on running engines. I've done it myself when tuning two strokes but you have to be EXTREMELY careful. and I would suggest having a restraining leather belt/harness wouldn't be being taking it too far.

 

Just to respond more to the alcohol thing. Methanol (wood alcohol) is a great model aeroplane engine fuel (for glo plug engines) and speedway bikes but it's a powerful poison if consumed. It's a frequent cause of death in places where unscrupulous operators serve it in drinks. It infamously has been detected in some wines in the past as well as Glycol (anti freeze fluid)resulting in a grand loss of trust in the affected brands. (as it should) .Nev

Tody while doing a leakdown, I tried the intake leak detection thing.

 

With the compressed air connected to one cylinder, I rotated the prop and checked that only the cylinder with the air supply had an open inlet valve. All the others were closed.

 

Then I took off the scat hose from the filter box and plugged it with a handy canister. (easier then altering the idle and also I wanted to have an indicator that pressure was being applied.

 

Turning on the air sure pressurised all the intake pipes. The scat hose increased in length... My guess is about 5 psi was there.

 

There was a hissing of air from the carby, there must be bleeds etc... hope it is all still ok.

 

Then I squirted each inlet pipe at the joints with soapy water looking for blowing bubbles. This was only semi-successful because I couldn't see all of the joints, especially the back of the flange at the cylinder head.

 

Maybe one of those fibre-optic probes would do better than me with an inspection mirror.

We are heading to Munich in 3 weeks (well, after a few days in England). I will do my best to fulfill that ambition on your behalf, apart from the lederhosen that is.
