Real men (boys) used their fingers, and also learnt to clean the edges on props. Chicken sticks also tended to break props. While modelling in the RAAF through the 70's, I discovered that the engines in the CAC Sabres were started with a material called Iso-Propylene-Nitrate (IPN), was a good 'nitro' replacement and there were still a few bottles laying around. 1
