Another Icon A5 crash

(CNN)Pitcher Roy Halladay, who won two Cy Young awards and more than 200 major league baseball games during a stellar career, died Tuesday in a plane crash off the Florida coast, authorities said.

 

Halladay, 40, was the only person on the two-seater plane that crashed just off Holiday, on Florida's Gulf coast north of the Tampa Bay area, Pasco County Sheriff Chris Nocco said.

 

The single-engine plane, an Icon A5, crashed in very shallow water and was found upside down.

 

According to the Pasco County Sheriff's office, a 911 call came in at 12:06 p.m. ET saying that a small plane had crashed.

 

There were no distress calls, the sheriff's office said.

In defence of the aircraft, this and the previous accident appear unrelated to the aircraft itself, more likely the way it was being operated.

Not much can go wrong until you put a human in it, then it can go pear shaped as we have seen

It's more than cheeky for the company to now blame the FAA for not ensuring there is 'adequate low level training' for pilots.They were happy to accept all the interest and probably sales, from all the LL vids that have been posted in recent times. IMHO, they should now "man up" and recommend pilots don't exceed their capabilities and get some proper instruction in LL if they intend to do it. A very irresponsible response!

 

AFAIK, the US regulations don't have a lower limit over unpopulated areas, which is different to Australia, (500ft agl). However, located in their regs is the same section as in CASR 61, ie, that a pilot should ensure that they are competent to undertake any form of flying in the aircraft they have chosen to use. So, in the US, despite there being no lower height limit, and no formal LL rating, (although there is an ag rating, but only for CPLs and above), a pilot is in breach of the regs if they fly a manoeuvre in which they lack competency. Only the survivors will be prosecuted!

DON'T BE DAFT. . . I read a report of a person stuck in quicksand near to Mont Saint Michel, France. Several people (estimated at around seven, due to the social media movies . . ) just stood there and filmed the person in difficulty with their mobile phones and NOT ONE OF THEM rang and alerted the rescue services.. . .

 

This happened around six years back by the way. .. still horrendous. . . the victim drowned.

Several people (estimated at around seven, due to the social media movies . . ) just stood there and filmed the person in difficulty with their mobile phones and NOT ONE OF THEM rang and alerted the rescue services.. . .This happened around six years back by the way. .. still horrendous. . . the victim drowned.

The autopsy found he was so full of a cocktail of drugs he shouldn't have been driving a car, let alone flying an aircraft.

 

Sadly, the misuse of drugs in the sporting arena appears to be a constant, ongoing problem. Too many people can't handle the enormous pressures to perform, and fall into the trap of resorting to drugs, both legal and illegal.

Most people out there would act the same way, just observe, it's a form of shock, oh what do I do scenario?. Takes a particular kind of person to risk their own lives jumping into the unknown to rescue someone, the bystanders cannot be in anyway help responsible. I've been a part of an EMS team for years, it's no picnic it's very confronting!

 

The pilot should not have been there in the first place, his family now suffer the consequences of his irresponsible actions, I feel for them.

There's always plenty of bystanders at crashes who are just happy to gawk and video, and let others risk their necks trying to save victims.
