It's a credit to commercial aircraft engineering that so many of those aircraft actually survived the abuse being handed out to them!

He had guts persisting with it.

I hope he'd ruled out all other options - ie diverting to another airport with less wind - before doing that one. Looked extremely hairy.

Last year my sister-in-law came down for a visit, I watched her plane make 2 approaches in high winds, and then give up and go back to Melbourne. Inconvenient, yes, but safe.

 

 

Words to live by! (Unless you're a glider pilot).
