cherokeedriver Posted March 5, 2018 Posted March 5, 2018 Under CASA regulations for VH- registered aircraft, do all flight instruments need to be certified? Also looking at installing a secondary radio and I have a Garmin 430 on board as well. I don't believe the secondary radio is TSO certified.
Yenn Posted March 5, 2018 Posted March 5, 2018 The rules allow experimental Vh reg. aircraft to use un certified instruments, but they still have to comply with some requirements, such as bi annual checks. For non experimental aircraft, you can install whatever you want but it will not be considered to be a flight instrument. By that I mean you could have a non certified altimeter in addition to the installed one but not instead of it.
facthunter Posted March 5, 2018 Posted March 5, 2018 You could also have a hand held radio carried on board. If the other(s) failed and you had to use the non certified one no body should complain. It's better than silence. You can even call up the Tower on a mobile in an abnormal situation. Installed essential instruments must be TSO'd and serviced/calibrated at the specified times. Nev
cherokeedriver Posted March 5, 2018 Author Posted March 5, 2018 Currently my top priority is to have two radio units installed. GNS430 being a certified unit acting as comm 1 and comm 2 being a non-TSO ICOM unit. in addition i always carry a hand held as well.
