Birdseye Posted March 25, 2018 Posted March 25, 2018 Short strip/wet grass............no wonder PIC when interviewed blamed 'brake failure' . Probably an ex truck driver, they use that excuse all the time.

Frankus1aust Posted March 25, 2018 Posted March 25, 2018 I was there a couple of hours before the incident and just made it to the end of the taxiway, turned around and called it off. Clearly the IFR had arrived. By 1:00 the conditions would have been not much better with maybe a little VMC hole for a sparrow. The strip at YLIL has enough length but not if you are too fast and touching down half way down the strip. Also the conditions suggest the pilot was reluctant to do a go around. We're all experts in hindsight. At least he walked away.
kaz3g Posted March 25, 2018 Posted March 25, 2018 Apparently the long strip is temporarily shortened from 1350 down to 850 due taxiway works. YLIL is on the heavy clay/loams that characterise the Valley. They get greasy when wet and almost bottomless when really wet. It has brought more than one intrepid flyer to grief. Kaz
SDQDI Posted March 26, 2018 Posted March 26, 2018 Well it is a bit late to worry about the pilots feelings it seems he has already taken afence
GraemeK Posted March 26, 2018 Posted March 26, 2018 Well it is a bit late to worry about the pilots feelings it seems he has already taken afence I like how you slid that one in ...
kaz3g Posted March 26, 2018 Posted March 26, 2018 It's the pilot's fault...he shouldn't have stuck his nose in! Kaz
Ron5335 Posted March 28, 2018 Posted March 28, 2018 With kaz3g's enlightenment of the incident, I can now see a current horticulturists report as a requirement for flight plans in and out of airports with grass strips.

It might be a slow week in the office for bright ideas.
turboplanner Posted March 28, 2018 Posted March 28, 2018 Would a casual peek at Notams be reasonable?
