Cygnet Pilot Posted April 12, 2018 Posted April 12, 2018 Hello Everyone, My name is Doran. I just found this forum. I am 50+ years old and have been flying with ratings for over 30 years. I have owned several aircraft and currently own and fly an armature built bird called a Cygnet SF2A. I don't have a memory without airplanes as my first ride was in a Piper Tri Pacer at 4 years of age. I've been involved with homebuilts since 16 years of age and have owned and flown several including my Cygnet.
FlyingVizsla Posted April 12, 2018 Posted April 12, 2018 Welcome Doran Tell me a bit more about your Cygnet .. There are lots of builders on this site and a lot cogitating over what to build, so there'll be plenty of interest. I too, grew up in planes with a flying father. Sue
Cygnet Pilot Posted April 13, 2018 Author Posted April 13, 2018 Good morning Sue. Thanks for the reply. The Cygnet SF2A was designed in the 70's and won an award for best new design. N6580K was given its airworthiness cert. in 1991 I'm Muskegon, Michigan. After the builder passed several years ago it was sold on eBay and went to just north of Tecumseh where I acquired it and flew her home to Ionia, Michigan last June and in between flying...did some overdue maintenance and repairs. The Wings are of wood geodetic construction and are angled forward . The roots are at the pilots and passengers shoulders. The cowling slopes downward and in my case..houses a 76hp VW conversion. This gives excellent visibility in cruise and landing. The fuselage and tail assembly is standard 4130 welded. Wing span..30.5 ft. Length..... ..19.5 ft Weight...... .625lbs Gross........ .1100lbs Rotate.........40mph Lift off. .......50mph Climb.... . ...60mph..1100fpm full fuel (16 gal.) 185lb pilot solo. With 130lb passenger..700-800fpm..80 degree far...820 ASK (KY70). Cruise... . ....90-100mph Final.............55mph T.D. ............ 45mph T O roll solo or loaded.. 500-600 ft. Landing roll...600 ft over a 100 ft obstacle. These are my tested numbers with this 6580K. Slips are FUN and she really can come down then! Probably more info than you wanted but I will waste no opportunity to show her off a bit. I'll post a pic if it is possible on here. Doran Jaffas

Guest debra stewart Posted April 14, 2018 Posted April 14, 2018 Welcome Doran, You certainly have plenty of experience as opposed to my meagre 200 hrs. Makes me feel intimated, ha ha. I'm off to work so cant chat, maybe later, bye for now, Debbie
Keen Aviator Posted April 14, 2018 Posted April 14, 2018 Hi Debra your plane looks a tad like mine. Cheers Ron
Soleair Posted April 15, 2018 Posted April 15, 2018 That's a very pretty aeroplane, Doras, & certainly looks fun to fly. Impressive performance figures, too. The combination of shoulder wing & forward sweep gives the best of all as regards visibility from the cockpit in my view (geddit?). I have a fair bit of time on the ARV Super2 that shared this format. Welcome to the forum. Bruce
Aerodavetoorbul Posted April 15, 2018 Posted April 15, 2018 Gday Doran, I have not long landed myself, welcome aboard. You obviously have a great deal more hours than I, but I’m working on that. I am considering building my own aircraft. At present I’m working on a 1934 Hawker Demon as a volunteer. I’m doing the woodwork.
Guest debra stewart Posted April 15, 2018 Posted April 15, 2018 gee, Ron, it does too !!!! My plane is the best plane in the world though !!! It has taught me so much. Is it a Skyfox Gazelle? My eyes are playing up at the moment ( its 2.30am) so I cant see it clearly. OK better try to get another hour or so before work, bye for now, Debbie
Cygnet Pilot Posted April 15, 2018 Author Posted April 15, 2018 Hello everyone, Trying to navigate this site. Hope to get better at it in time. Deb, as far as hours go...less than 1000 but I've been fortunate to have flown multiple aircraft and have a few ratings and endorsements Test flown several homebuilts as factory builts after major repairs. Not sure if that makes me good or a tad crazy but some skill and blessings were with me ..as now and I'm still here. Flying after these years for me still makes me feel like a kid albeit with a little wisdom. Never met a plane I didn't like or a pilot that I didn't want to talk to
Guest debra stewart Posted April 16, 2018 Posted April 16, 2018 You are very fortunate to have had so many opportunities. My background had nothing to do with aviation so how I've ended up with my own plane and five years of flying, I don't know, ha ha, but it has made the process very difficult as well. Gee, 1000 hrs. I cant even imagine that, but then again, I couldn't imagine ever landing a plane once either. Time and practice are magic ingredients in anything I suppose. Talk soon, Debb

How many hours have you done in it? I have only had mine for 5 months and have only done 15 hours since I got it. Just completed my BFR in it a couple of weeks ago.Cheers Ron
