Hi

Been looking at aircraft to buy and more than one hangar conversation has revolved around the cost of, and ability to complete oneself, maintenance.

Nothing I've found on CASA or on RAAUS website has elicited these differences clearly. Tbh I still can't work out the difference between 23 and 24 rego, its probably buried in the RA manuals somewhere but the Technical manual certainly doesn't explain much at all.

So from a self maintainer perspective, what could I do myself if I bought any of these regos and does the self maintenance requirements differ between each?

I'm presuming I need to do the certs/courses for RA self maintenance (and initially do all work/seek advice with someone who knows what they are doing)

I'm also balancing cost wise that my ability to maintain a VH craft is a specialists job and beyond pumping up the tyres and topping up oil there ain't much I can self service on a VH without LAME certification.

So when these old dogs in the hangar say "it's so much cheaper when you can maintain it yourself" what exactly do they mean? Surely I can't do my own full rebuild right there in the hangar and set my TBO back to 0hrs? Right?

Thanks

I have a similar question, two years later. Just glossed over the RAaus tech manual :

Is :

A fast-kit build like a Jabiru kit- that has staged L4 inspections

AND that the factory built version of the identical aircraft is certified and all nice.

is that a 19.x or a 23.x ?

My interpretation is that the factory Jabiru kit is a 23.x,

and a aircraft made from plans are 19.x

The whole 51% thing I need some guidance with

thanks for the links. the 51% explanation ones are particularly useful.

I will. the confusion comes from the following raa mag article explanation :

*"19-xxxx: Amateur built, own design from scratch or from plans or kit; "*

.... ok that includes jabiru kits I guess ?

*"23-xxxx: Factory built LSA; MTOW 600/650kg land/water. It can be either factory (‘ready to fly’) or kit built of the same make and model."*

Hangon how can that be - "23.xxx factory built LSA" and "either factory (ready to fly) or kit built"?????

errrr does that mean the factory get a kit and build it ? or is that an amateur building a factory kit of their factory build airplane?

From my limited experience 24 was the factory built now extended to 23 but not kits.

I think I have this worked out : thanks everyone for the input.

19 – Amateur Built (CAO 95.55)

23 – LSA – Factory Built (CAO 95.32 OR 95.55)

24 – Factory Built – Certified (CAO 95.55)

You can't modify LSA. or VH easily. VH exp all the experts seem to go for if you want flexibility. Don't most warbirds operate under that? Nev

Hi Nev. OK

I'm reading advisory-circular-21-02-standard-certificates-airworthiness.pdf and AC21-7 , amongst others.

Seems that "your mileage may vary" . Hypothetically, users modifying cowlings etc, variations to cooling, electrical , engines, so....strictly by the book as I read it, those planes are now experimental., by the book.

VH experimental has no problems with modifications, unless they are major. You could change from an O320 to an O360 without problems, unless the C of G was changed too much.

Pretty sure its not quite so clear cut with the 23 & 24 - there is a sub category which is basically experimental in both . EG - Amphibians with reversible propeller seem to fall into the sub category
