Any thoughts on using the additive MXO AV in unleaded to replace avgas

I thought this thread would have had a few replies by now.

 

With the ever present threat of leaded fuel being withdrawn from sale and after researching octane boosting additives, only MXO-AV came up as officially okey dokeyed by the aviation authorities. (that we could find)

 

Has anyone else out there used it and if so how did it perform?

 

Or has anyone used another product they are happy with?

Im pretty sure its the one I was using, didnt really see or feel any difference

 

May be just a coincidence BUT when using it I get small flakes and hairs in fuel sample. Im concerned it may be attaking older fibre fuel tanks. I stopped using it, deposits stopped

 

Started again a few weeks later, rubbish became present in samples again.

 

Not really conclusive but Im off it for the time being. Any one have any evidence otherwise?

 

I was using it with Avgas to try and keep 3300 Jabiru rings etc freed up.

I don't know if lead is even required regardless of engines used. As we all know it is supposed to prevent valve recession into the head.

 

The reason I'm saying this is that lead "may" prevent valve recession in " some " engines. I refer to car engines of course. I used to drive an XE Falcon on LP gas for 850000kms. and never touched the engine. LP gas is a dry fuel with absolutely NO lubricating effects whatsoever and it still ran like a dream when I got rid of it. A mate of mine used to drive cabs with the old 302 and cast iron 250's and he too had never any problems even though one went for nearly 1500000kms. they never ran on petrol.

 

Jabiru and rotax have hardened valve seats and should easily cope without the stuff. It is also worth keeping in mind that lead creates undesirable problems like contaminating the oil and making a mess of the inside of engines. I'm not trying to suggest not to use avgas or a lead replacement additive but would like to hear what your thoughts are .

Hi,

 

I used it for a while but found it was attacking the fuel tank material, had to replace the tank, stopped using it after that, was no benefit at all to me.

This thread was started three years ago and there does not seem to be any new information.

 

We had the distributor for this product call on us at Camden last week. He produced some results of a trial done in Queensland which suggested that the product had some value.

 

When I asked about its use in Jabiru engines, he claimed that a flying school at Narromine was using it with good results. Can anyone comment on that claim?

 

I have googled the product and the only results I have found are this thread, and some reproductions of the advertising blurb the distributor gave me.

 

Can anyone throw any light onto this product?

The school in Narromine used to use it, new owner now but fairly sure it hasn been used for a long time.

I am not sure whether the anti knock characteristics of unleaded fuel are up to the capability of leaded fuel yet for air craft.

does the octane number not accurately reflect antiknock characteristics? ie is 98PULP not about the same as 100LL?

Recently received some advertising for this product - MXO-AV Aviation Fuel and Performance Enhancer - saying it has been around since 1940's - promises to solve fuel problems related to the use of low or unleaded fuel. It mentions Ethanol issues, but does not say it addresses them. Glowing reference from Gilgandra Aero Club and a Gyro & Sky Fox owner.

 

 

 

Anyone have any further experiences with this?

It may or may not be any good, but using it with mogas instead of avgas still leaves the problem of the mogas quality being an unknown.

 

I used premium unleaded in my starlet with 2.2 Jab engine and got a bad batch of fuel, which resulted in detonation, which damaged a piston and rings. My opinion is that mogas is too much of a gamble, but of course BP did have a problem years ago with their avgas.
