Pschluter Posted June 30, 2018 Posted June 30, 2018 Sign the Petition Kingborough Council in southern Tasmania have decided Bruny Island’s only airport should close as it's expensive to maintain and upgrade. Kingborough Council are happy to support and expand a multi-million dollar vehicular ferry monopoly while totaling eliminating aviation, the businesses and next generation of residents that may come to depend on it. Sign the Petition By closing the island’s 750m (2460') airport would permanently deprive it of any future aviation infrastructure. It’s only aviation charter company would not be able to operate scenic flights. As part of a global network small airports provide safe navigation points for single engine aircraft. Every pilot knows where alternate airports are in case of a forced landing and generally plans to fly over them. In deteriorating weather conditions some flights are illegal unless there's an alternate airport along the way. Sign the Petition Removing this airport leaves the daily Cambridge - Melaleuca route without an alternate landing area reducing aviation safety for thousands that visit this World Heritage Area. More pointedly the airports removal robs residents of a mode of rapid and direct transport that is less polluting, autonomous, efficient and independent. It also increases the risk for existing flights and harms successful businesses and employment that rely on the airport. Although serviced by vehicular ferries, loosing the airport would only increase the island’s dependency on road and ferry transport monopoly. It will be irreplaceable! Finding long, level and flat tracks of land is increasingly harder and the cost of re-establishment would be substantial. Sign the Petition Bruny Island to Hobart Airport is a 15 minute flight but by road ferry road it’s a 90 minute meandering trip on a very good day if you don't have to wait at the ferry terminal. Hobart’s already overburdened city roads struggle to deal with ever increasing use. For around the cost of new car, aircraft ownership is increasing and affordable. Kingborough Council needs to show regard for it's future sons and daughters who might just want to fly to and from Bruny one day for half the price of a ferry ticket and considerably less carbon emissions. Although Kingborough Council complain of mounting maintenance and risk. Under Civil Aviation Regulations it is the pilot that is legally responsible for safe landings not the airport owner. Civil Aviation Advisory Publications CAAP 92-1 lists the guidelines for establishing an airstrip. Keep this unique airport in ratepayers hands for public use! Don't deny residents and visitor access to carbon efficient travel now or in the future. Don’t sell it it off to real estate developers for subdivision. red750 Posted June 30, 2018 Posted June 30, 2018 Looked for it on Google Maps satellite view - could not locate it. Where is it located?
Downunder Posted June 30, 2018 Posted June 30, 2018 Looks like southern end of the north island, just above "big lagoon".
Pschluter Posted June 30, 2018 Author Posted June 30, 2018 Looked for it on Google Maps satellite view - could not locate it. Where is it located? If you look NE above the neck that joins north and south it’s next to the highway 32/14 at 2179 Bruny Island Main Road Tasmania.
tillmanr Posted June 30, 2018 Posted June 30, 2018 I would think the strip is a must in the case of an emergency air response.
red750 Posted July 1, 2018 Posted July 1, 2018 If you look NE above the neck that joins north and south it’s next to the highway 32/14 at 2179 Bruny Island Main Road Tasmania. Found it. Flagged Google to have it tagged. (I've done that a few times elsewhere.)
kgwilson Posted July 1, 2018 Posted July 1, 2018 How can a 750 metre dirt strip with a few cones & windsock be expensive to maintain? Upgrading it is another issue. According to Google earth measurements from the threshold at the road end to the absolute other end it is only 620 metres. Does the council own the hangar at the road end? 2
red750 Posted July 25, 2018 Posted July 25, 2018 Just received an email from Google confirming that they have accepted my edit, and you can now search Bruny Island Airfield on Google Maps.
Downunder Posted July 26, 2018 Posted July 26, 2018 Cograts...I've tried half a dozen times to get the house numbers corrected in my street to no avail.
