Installing a UHF

Is the best way to get UHF in an aircraft to install a dedicated unit in the dash? Is there a way to use a handheld walkytalky through headsets. All I want it line of site communications.

 

Is there a harness available? Seperate key for activation? Or do you use the key on the walkytalky ?

A panel mounted rotary switch is a common method used in recreation aircraft, Microair and other brands have info on their sites. eg Microair 760P and UHF adaptor ~

Haven’t got one yet but looking at options on a vixxen .

 

Uhf option costs $4250; not bad for $600 unit. I’ve seen one in a photo in a Kelpie and it’s just a GME unit I might use in my ute. It is of course missing the mic and is wired into the intercom.

A handheld with headset adapter would be the lightest and cheapest. I have an icom a15 VHF as backup works well with the adapter i just use the ptt on the unit. A high power handheld in an aircraft will transmit over 100km

Xcom add a harness to a standard dash mount GME uhf set to interface with their airband set, I installed them myself, nothing challenging, just regular tools and farmer skillset.

Commant 121 in the kit I got, I installed it on top, but put the unity gain UHF antenna under the fuselage, it still has plenty of ground clearance.

HAT hight above terain for uhf transmitions formula is twice the height in feet squared expressed in miles ie 5000' x 2 = 10,000' squared = 100 miles

My Rotax 912 motivated aircraft is quiet enough to be able to use a hand held UHF,  with one cup of headset pushed away from ear, - works for me and way cheaper than integrating with VHF aircraft comms and means I can take the handheld and use it for other ground based applications. Go with the KISS principal !

Just had a look around the internet, looks like Xcom has gone the way of the DODO which is a shame if true.
