Temora and Narromine airpark.

hi all, looking at buying a block at Temora Airpark... we have the contract, but checking out Narromine this week before we move forward. Checked on flooding and the temora council was great and very helpful.

 

Contacted Narromine Council, they provided all development info but won’t tell me if the airport has flooded.

 

Sooooo I called the Narromine SES and they wouldn’t tell me either. They said it was confidential!!!!?????? And couldn’t tell me. I’m going up this week to door knock and see council......and I’m curious for a look as well.

 

So locals and anyone, has the Narromine airport flooded especially in the last 10 years during the big floods ?

 

My gut feeling is now to stay away from Narromine, but a trip there will be nice :)

If they got nothing to hide they would tell you is my guess..

 

But saying all is confidential has me thinking they don’t want to tell you I case you don’t buy.

Found a publication that says floor height for house must be 500mm +1% flood level ( no idea what it means) above ground. Looks like it floods, hangar may have lots of water in ir

Narromine is in the middle of heated debate about a flood levee. Id say that's why the sensitivity. Skypark is the councils own subdivision so extra butt protection needed.

 

The entire town is considered flood prone to a 1 in 100 yr event, last seen in 1955. That is before Burrendong dam constructed.

 

In recent years they have forced to build new houses above this level, most of the town is not.

 

These heights are ~ 1.0m above maximum flood height with some margin OVER the 1:100 level, I think so the chances of the aerodrome flooding are small. It is located in one of the highest areas locally.

 

If a levee is supported, it currently is not by many of the community, the skypark will be protected by it, however it seems likely the raised floor height will remain as insurers indicated "levees can fail"

 

Its a great place and aerodrome and currently local flyers becoming active which is good to see.

Narromine has a chequered, history particularly for the SAAA. When the council changes everything changes. (like so many places) Temora seems more locked on to aviation and is not so remote More secure In my opinion.. My experience with the council was not satisfactory at Narromine.. I won't elaborate publicly. I reckon it's likely to flood based on simple geography, or they would be more open. about it. 1 in a 100 seems to often become much less lately.. Nev

All councils have changes however currently they are keen on developing aviation and the loss (and return) of air shows in last decade has been a wake up

 

I don't think the aerodrome has ever flooded - kind of why its built where it is.

 

Cant vouch for the Skypark though and we see councils building freeboard on top of freeboard based on Brisbane and other experiences. Insurance drives everything

Thanks for the information everyone. I have had a number of chats with Phil JOHNSTON from council and meeting with him tomorrow. He has outlined what has happened and what is happening, on the same lines as "jetjr" information above. Will let you know how it goes.

Hi and thanks for the information. Met with Narromine council and they went out of their way. Showed me around town, through the park, what they are doing for future expansion. They have now moved the tourist information to the aircraft museum, upgrading the roads, curb and guttering out there. They have no intention to charge for landings, as they want to encourage avaition.

 

Stage 5 and 6 will come on line next year, so we have decided to buy in Narromine early next year. No time limit to build, so suits us down to the ground.

 

The flood levy will cover the park as well, even though the airport is at a “high point’ of the area and hasn’t flooded since the 50’s. There are pros and cons for both.

When I trained there in the 70s I was told that when the WWII airbase was set up, drainage ditches/pipes were dug each side of the strips (from memory) 18' deep. Presumably they drain to a point lower than that.

Feet. Seemed pretty deep to me, so I guess that's why it stuck in my memory. I suspect the nearby river bed is about that level.
